this is the second time I had to re-spool because of a huge salmon that took me 45 minutes to land, and caused my reel to spool way off balance.

 

How can I avoid this? Spinning reels spool perfectly, while centerpins do not because there is no movement of the line. I have never noticed this while steel heading....but these salmon take my reel for a 100 yard ride causing this S*** to happen. This is my second full spool of 10lb mono, I cant afford to keep buying line

no need to respool with new line, it will happen, happens with all reels on a pin, fly reels included, what you do, find a long open area where you're by yourself, and let loose, pull the hook off so you don't get snagged and just let the float go and wind her back up

It happens, just let it drift out in the current then reel it back in using your hand to move the line side to side on the spool so it goes on even.  

 

Also could be that your reel isn't lined up straight with the guides on the rod.

hmm, yes that might have happened after I frantically put it back on after having it fall off into the mud on the bottom of the river lol.

 

Hate these darn sliding rings, already lost my reel twice haha, luckily always revived it

Even if you electrical tape one ring and the other ring you can push snuggly against the reel, use a RUBBER band and the ring wont move.

 

The reason I say rubber, I use those material hair ties to hold the rods in place while transporting them. This wont stop the ring from moving.

Do zip ties not work? I do not float fish but I know those things are strong as hell lol.

Zip ties would work however it may damage the cork on the rod. Also electrical tape is used in order to be able to easily remove the reel for transport afterwards.

10-4. I keep hearing some of the guys I work with talk about their success with float fishing. Kind of want to get into it but I am just starting to take musky serious and the amount of money you drop into musky is really like getting divorced.

If thats the case for Musky, Float fishing would be like a greek wedding, the honey moon, buying the house, her cheating on you. Then you loose everything

Hey man go with a fixed reel seat for salmon they're notorious for busting gear. As for what the other guys said about letting out some line and winding back on . That's good practice after every big fight keeps the line from digging in on the very next cast too

Some anglers use the appropriate size of bicycle tubing instead of electrical tape to keep their rings in place. You definitely need something or you will bang up or loose your reel eventually.

I started using this stuff called magic wrap last season. It looks pricey but it stretches to 3 times the length you cut . I like it because it doesn't gum up my hands or cork.
