I have a few different rods but my favourite overall is my one piece Mitchell spider glass 7' med-heavy. Ive had it forever I originally bought a 2 piece Mitchell rod from the sportsman show when I was about 12 and on my way home I was checking the flexibility of the tip when it broke in front of my eyes, needless to say I cried like a little baby lol. not ashamed of it either I was so happy to get that rod.

And so when I got home I wrote a letter to Mitchell and explained what happened and sent the rod along with it. About a month or so later a big tube showed up at my house with my new rod I was the happiest kid alive at that moment I'll never forget it. quite honestly despite the headache of transporting it if u have never tried a one piece rod I highly suggest it the sensitivity for detecting bites is amazing and well worth the trouble IMO

One can never have enough rods!

As for Spinning rods, it depends on what you are going to fish for and the choice is everything from ultrlight to heavy actions.

If you are only wanting and can afford one rod to do the job, my best advice is a 7' medium action rod for most types of fishing. 

As for rod blanks of quality and affordability..............IMO, St Croix of course........one of the very few blanks that is still made in America.........

Couple of other 7' rods that I haven't used in ages and don't remember what they are...lol! Plus a couple of reels that go with them.

 

I will say, that I'm really enjoying the 8'6" Ugly Stik and it has had no problems with the big beefy Carp that I've been hitting. Well, I haven't exploded it yet!

I have 2 x 1 piece Uglystick surf rods, I do like em bc they are alot more robust and LONG casts are achieveable, but I sitll think a 2 piece out preforms and is alot more convient. I use those rods for Saltwater when I am in Florida.

 

Good on mitchell to send you another rod, there are certain things as consumers that keep you brand loyal, I had a similar expierence with Fenwick.

I have a bunch of rods from a bunch of manufacturers, but I own 5 st. Croix and they are the standouts. A couple of eyecons a couple premiers and one 15+ year old wild river 13 footer that by rights should have broken a loooooooonnnnngggg time ago as I have beat on it terribly. Really I think I've had good value from every st. Croix I've owned. As for loomis, my stuff is all over 20 years old, but when I was in the market for a couple new rods this year, I handled a bunch of new loomis rods, and frankly I prefered the st. Croix. Your mileage may vary!

My usual, all purpose go-to rod is a Rapala Magnum MH 7'. I bought it last year as a back-up to complement my arsenal of mostly Fenwick rods (I love them), and it immediately fell into favour, even though it is noticeably more crude than any of my Fenwicks.
