ya I think the fight would be fun because I've heard they are really strong. But I think they are really ugly looking. They look like a lamp ray IMO and Ive heard they really destroy your lures. They also have the ability to breathe air which kinda creeps me out lol.
If I ever hook into one I hope you are around Alfie!!

Flounder, skate, and dogfish were all caught bottom fishing squid and clams. Pickerel was using a small white spinnerbait. The whitefish was bottom bouncing nymphs. Bonefish was shrimp flies. The bluerunner and snapper was a 1/2 oz jig and hermit crab. And the bass was using crankbaits.

you fish top middle and bottom .... I fish them all too.

Make sure there is a beer or 2 for me in that tackle box, OK ? :) .

Kleiner, Bowfin are not that ugly when you land one and lay it on some grass to take a pic. I don't catch a lot of them, they come as incidental catches mostly at places I fish, but they are strong and put up a fight. I have heard they have something resembling a lung and can breath air but mine never stay out of the water long enough for me to find out. I have to admit my first siting of a Bowfin kind of creeped me out though. When I was about 10 I was standing on a bridge with my brother looking down at the water and a bunch of Sunfish and Perch getting ready to fish when a huge dark shadow darted out from a weed bed and grabbed one of the Perch or Sunfish. An old man who was standing on the bridge with me told me it was a Dogfish, which is what some call a Bowfin. He also told me that their flesh was poisonous. Don't know about the flesh thing, I rarely keep fish. But my brother and I did make it a point of catching Perch to use for Dogfish bait ( legal back then ). We had a great time catching those Dogfish and it turned out there was some huge Pike in that river too that liked perch.

Alfie, now to work on my list. I have til the Ticats game starts  .

I've heard they are a plank fish - you cook them on a cedar plank soaked in beer, throw out the fish and eat the plank lol.

Alfie - that's quite the list you got there, good for you!

What? Bowfin aren't from Asia, they are native, have been here for 10 thousand years.

I am not aware of any bowfin in Asia. I think you may be confusing with Northern Snakehead, Blotched Snakehead or Striped Snakehead...which looks similar, but completely different family of species. Love to be corrected if I am wrong with some scientific documentation.

Sorry for digging up an old post...but while I was searching for "snakehead" on the internet, I came across this topic. I also saw some mentioning of my name here prior to me joining this site. I thought I would chime in.

Thus far, I caught 386 species of fish, but 7 species are missing good pictures. I still counted them but I would love to catch those 7 species again some day for photographic record.

The list is too long to post here (I tired and it said my post was too long :???: )...so I can only leave you with the link to the lifelist on my blog and you can see all the pictures and categorization of the the species.

http://muskiebaitadv...ecies-list.html

There are 32,000+ species of fish in the world and I have barely even scratched 1% of them...my "wanted" list is too long to post as well...but I'll just say there are a few regions of the world I would like to fish. It is my goal to fish all seven continents before I die...yes...all seven...including Anarctica!

Areas on the top of my bucket list to fish, both for diveristy of species and quality of specimens...

East Cape, Mexico

Exmouth, Australia

Amazon and Pantanal, Brazil

Isle of Man, UK

Lake Tanganyika and Zambezi River, Zambia

Madagascar

New Zealand

Japan
