I love smallie fishing and usually find the first thing in the morning top water fishing the absolute best. However I've never tried fly fishing for them. How is it? I imagine the fight would be awesome as those little bastards put up a great fight!
I'm loving it! Even the little guys put up a good fight, and they are very plentiful. Not sure what I'll do when I get a big one, as my setup is pretty light, but it'll be fun for sure.

It can be really fun sight fishing the shallows of rivers for them on the fly. Crayfish patterns are a ton of fun, you can use a weighted crayfish fly and let it sink to the bottom, then strip it in with 4" strips and it simulates a crayfish swimming backwards in that defensive pose they use. Watching that smallie hunt it down is a lotta fun!

Nice setup there. It's easy to spend a lot on fly-fishing.
If you want a great starter wader, look into the Redington Crosswaters. Sail is clearing them out for $100 + $25 rebate = Great value. They are good quality waders and breathable.

Finally taking up fly fishing after thinking about it for a long. Picked this Sage 3250 and putting on a Sage Approach 5wt. The reel has Rio Grand line on it. Excited to get started but need to pick some other gear still.
Any input on waders, vest/sling pack, where to buy bulk flies? Any other advice would be appreciated!

reelflies.ca is a good place to buy bulk flies. They are cheaper than fly shops for sure.

Thanks, just put in an order to get me started.
@riddickulous, I'll check out those waders as well.
Thanks!

Friend Fainted in the canoe Sunday tipping us over. He is fine, but my fishing rod went missing. Had that rod and real for at least 10 years now, not used much, just starting to do more fishing. The good news was my tackle box which has been stocked up this season was not lost.
Anyway bought a replacement general purpose rod and real, Ugly Stik GX2 Medium Spinning Reel & Rod Combo, 6-ft 6-in. Yes I know the Real is basic, but I was mostly after the rod, form what I looked up it’s a great general purpose rod. The real will be replaced when I find a nice one on sale. Plus the combo was on sale at Canadian tire tire for 48$.
Also bought some steal leaders, non led weights, line for real (10lb monofilament), and some weedles hooks.

Fenwick Elite Tech Bass 7' M/F casting rod.
Was in the area so decided to stop by the local SAIL just to "browse" which is never a good idea. They were having sale on all rod and reels, and since I've been eyeing one of these rods for few months now, I decided to pull the trigger on a completely impulse purchase. Actually almost grabbed another Revo SX reel to go with it as well. But painfully abstained myself. Can't wait to try it out this weekend...

Nice pick-up on the rod, I hear those are excellent rods at very good price.
I picked up the Simms headwaters sling for $60 on clearance at Sail.
