Not sure the thread will accomplish what you intended it too. I think of a quote I've heard,not sure if it was Kennedy about Americans going to the moon not because it was easy- because it was hard.If fly fishing was easy everyone would do it. I enjoy the challenge of trying to a) locate fish select a fly that will fool a trout c) present the fly in a realistic way. My next challenge is to tie my own fly and catch a steelhead with said fly. Why does one method of fishing have to be better than another? Why do I fish in the first place? It's certainly not to put meat on the table, my reasons will be different from yours or anyone else for that matter. I enjoy the float rod and the fly rod in fact, usually bring both. Drifting with a pin is awesome. What's better? Only you can answer that once you've tried both methods.

float fishing is popular in ontario river's because it works, the rainbows here are finicky and require a instant hook set and a stealth presentation. besides where are you going to really fly fish? few spots i fish have 50 feet of room to back cast and i dont know many that do, i dont consider fly fishing some one r doing 10 ft roll casts  over and over again... now for resi browns a fly rod is more efficient for sure as you can strip fly's as well as be able to cast super delicate presentations. both have there advantages but for ontario, CENTERPIN

 

 

like to see you bring your CP setup into a 5ft wide section  of creek in the woods and try to fish it with a 13ft rod

 

 

no fly fishing in ontario....excuse me while i pull myself off the floor from laughing at your uneducated mindset, you don't need 100ft of line out to effectivily fish a pool or pocket.  i have done both, i prefer the fly, and i fish the eastern lake ontario tribs which are smaller than the western ones.

 

you talk about stealth presentation, whats so stealthy about a float with a roe bag and a bunch of shot hitting the water, vs a small size 12 nymph off  roll cast

was tyring to make a point about roll casts, don't need the rolling fly casts to be fly fishing

I do both. And i prefer the fly SO much more. Its not much fun having a few salmon eggs sitting under a piece of plastic. And then theres the fly, throwing beautifull loops, matching hatches to the exact diameter and colour, throwing perfect casts inches infront of a fish, and then you feel the hit first hand. And as for the fly guys as mean girls, at least we're not afraid to touch the line

I use a 9' custom rod for fishing tiny creeks with my pin

if you feel the need to troll my every post please at least read them, obviously you dont need 100 ft of line out to fish a pool .... dont even understand your point there. what i ment was that on east tribs you see people using a fly rod and just flipping the line out and that is not fly fishing! a drennen float with properly shotted line and fluorocarbon is pretty much as stealth as it gets for roe bag fishing. if you read what i said , then you wouldve seen that i commented that fly rods have the advantage when it comes to light presentations like a nymph. but really i dont care who you feel has the bigger stick here, as my post said both have their advantages but for ontario rivers,a centerpin is more efficient.

how is that not fly fishing?? you're fishing with a fly rod/reel, fly line, a tapered leader and nearly weightless fly.......sound slike fly fishing to me

Both are successful techniques and very similar really...

fly vs pinning wars .... lo lol lol ...... both can catch fish .... on pinning, when you begin catching a lot It will make you feel like there's nothing there left for you to learn .... on fly fishing you will learn how to control, hit your target, land like a feather then Fish On.
