i just spooled my pin with braid, lets see if this helps

Be careful not to exceed the rod rating with the braid, you want your line to break, not the rod

Most guys use much heavier main line than the rod rating to use a lead that matches the rod rating so I don't see how that would be any different with braid

the line rating on a rod IS NOT for the mainline if you are using a LEADER. now if you use main straight to lure or bait then you follow it. other wise you follow it based on the weakest link to your bait. eg your leader.

I don't use any swivels on my setup and have very little twist make sure you trim you shot line knot close as I believe this can cause some twist. that and never use siglon 12 lb xt and add lip balm to make it float real good

I use the 8lb Raven high viz yellow main line and I usually get at least 5 days with no twist.. If it starts twisting I'll tie in one of the Raven XXXsmall swivels a couple feet above the float and run a few long drifts for a bit.. it usually takes all the twist out in a few casts and then you can remove the swivel if you want.. The nice thing is you can use the xxx small swivel above the float all the time and it's so light it doesn't effect your drift and doesn't way the line down...

A lot of the twist comes from using the side hand cast.. If you learn the spin cast it may not twist as much.. Also if the line gets too twisted I pull off about 100 + feet and cut it off.. To determine where my the twist starts I pull it off and hold the line straight in both hands with my hands about 12 to 16" inches apart and bring my hands together.. if the line twists I keep working my way down the line and testing it until I get no twists and then I cut it off there.  The nice thing with the Raven line is it's about $13 for almost 1000 yards so it's inexpensive and it also floats if you run long drifts and lay the line on the surface a lot.. Also I think most stores sell it so it's easy to get..

By the way.. I like the high vis yellow line so I can see my customers lines and so they can better see it too, especially in long slow water where laying the line on the water is normal.. it does help.. but if you have great eyes any color will do fine..

I much prefer the 8lb over the 10lb.. just seams to cast and run better for me, you should try it, unless your on big water like the Niagara or use really heavy leaders...

why aren't you guys using braid? next to no twist, you cast further, it floats, no more wimpy hook sets

Personally I've never used braid, but anyone I know that has tried it has gone back to mono. I do a lot of winter/ cold weather steelheading, and braid would not be ideal in cold weather situations. I've also been told by many respected steelheaders that braid tends to wrap around the rod tip more than mono. If you're not paying attention it could easily lead to a broken rod.

As far as your line twist is concerned, it really sounds like it was either put on wrong, or already twisted (I've had the odd spool that comes off twisted). I side cast most of the time (best for distance and accuracy) and have little problem with twist.

what kind of line are you using, i tried trilene and stren and the twist drove me crazy. you are right about the ice with braid its brutal, tip wrap would be bad with a soft rod like you say.
