Happy New Year, OFF regulars.

This year I took up float fishing which has been a lot of fun despite the fact that I have only been able to make it out for a few trips since the fall.  Now that the season is over in my area and I still stink of skunk, I was wondering if I could ask a few questions to the seasoned float anglers out there.

- Shotting my line for low water levels and small creeks...I understand the trick is to bulk the shot, but should it be bulked under the float only, or should I bulk in in a couple places?  Above the leader only, or should I put some on the leader too?  When is it a good idead to taper shot?

- Roe bags... how big should I tie them?  I have been experimenting with bags about the size of nickels and dimes.  Also, do you just hook them through the mesh, or do you secure them with a bait loop knot on the shank?

- Hook size... how big would you recommend for small creeks or big water?  I have been experimenting with size 10 through 6...

Thanks to all who are willing to put in their  $.02.   Tight lines in '14.

Shotting patterns:

Roe bags

Using salmon eggs, I would tie bags of 3, 5, 7 and 10 eggs for different water clarity conditions

Hook size

I use the same size 10's-6's

2g floats 5 BB shot spread out as much as posable and bag size will vary with clarity .. Dirty water go nickel and clear go smaller than dime with rainbow roe ... Hook size should vary from 8-14

Thanks Brian and Mr. Boughner.

Looks like I'm on track as far as presentation and hook size goes.  On the other hand, I kind of wondered if I had my shot theory backwards.  Brian, that is the most useful shot-pattern reference to date so I bookmarked it.  Mr. Boughner, I am going to give your pattern a try when my local ditch opens up agian.

Fishing is more mental than anything else.  With confidence in setup and technique, those fish will start biting;

putting in time on your various local will pay off.. it is really about learning each nook and cranny of your chosen river that will hold fish. Remember where you see people catch fish and go and learn the drift later. or chat it up with guys and they'll eventually give you some tips. Being a friendly guy goes a long way down there! And like Nate82 said - confidence is everything!
