You will understand what the old guy was going on about once you mess with a silver chinny. But ya, steelhead all the way

salmon are much stronger and much harder to catch in the river then steelhead, steelhead bite well in the river if you know how to fish for them, salmon don't, most who catch them one after the other are flossing or snagging, i don't know what you mean by the "hunt" but if you mean landing it and fighting it downstream and acrobatics, salmon definitely wins, steelhead are mores fun to fish for in rivers because they bite better and look better and you can show off more with it, haha. Most dont realize how hard it is to get a salmon to willingly take the bait from MORE THEN 5 CM FROM ITS MOUTH, for rivers, i like steelhead more because they bite better, look better and taste better (i mainly fish g-bay tribs) but in the lake, nothing beats getting a salmon while trolling river mouths at night or down rigging them in the summer in deep parts of the lake PURE AWESOME!!! that being said i love fishing for browns even more then steelhead and i love cohos even more, because elf their fighting abilities but ounce again they are harder to catch, i would trade a fresh steelhead for a chrome coho or chinny any day of the year!

What I mean is - bushwhacking, looking for holes, determining depth, underwater structures, figure out what they want to eat that day, drift, hook, land, repeat.

if its open water/pier fishing ill take salmon any day. theres nothing like having a 30lb chinny take off into the lake leaving my drag screaming. if its in the river salmon shut down and its more fun steel heading, hiking up ad down a river, crawling up to a pool you wanna fish and all the technical stuff. if its in a lake ill take salmon over steelies

×3 on the open water chin dawgs. Ive only had the privilege to catch a couple but man what a rush.
X3-X=X2....or something like that. I've caught salmon while downrigging from my friends boat on Lake O. and near the mouth of the Notty. No comparison! The salmon at the mouth were a whole lot more fun----a hard hit, going like greased lightning toward the far shore, up and down the river stripping line, the sound of line stripping from the reel. Man, what a rush!!
OK, FG---the debate is still on! Congrats!

then i have to agree with you on this one, salmon will take any bait as long as its bright and you get it pi$$ed enough, in the lake its even easier, but you have to have patience for catching salmi in the river and you still have to bushwhack to find spots without crowds, i know of one on sobers creek never seen anon there, its all a matter of searching, you have to run after the fish more and have to be more fast to land a salmon as if you do something wrong especially on a pin with a fresh salmon, it can result in a broken rod, i still look for holes when the salmon run, actually i use the salmon run to my advantage, scope out spots for steelies where there are lots salmon eggs and nice deep pools, that later in the season will be loaded with steelies! as CT said, if in the lake trolling i would take a salmon over a steelie any day, if in the river, then ill take a steelie over a salmon, but ill take a fresh coho over a steelie and a brown over a fresh coho, lol.

if you want a brown wait till fall they come in with the chinnies, if you know the right spots they come in big, i know a few spots for brookies, it might surprise you but i have caught 5+ pounder 5 minutes from my home in newmarket, no-one knows this spot, but let me tell you, man does it ever surprise people that i get them so close to home!

Agree with BowSlayer on the browns. Some rivers have incredible lake run Brown fishing if you know where to find them.

I will take a fresh chinny any day over a bow....just my preference.

you have to compare fresh salmon to a bow, since once salmon turn dark, the fight is just about gone, silver salmon no comparison, when you're out with a downrigger and the rod flattens out and line starts screaming off the reel, you race for the rod while the driver puts the boat into reverse to chase the fish down, its a huge rush, or from a pier chinny hits like a freight train, then takes off like it was shot out of canon putting your drag to the test and you're left wondering if you've got enough line on your reel
don't get me wrong, i love to fish for both, steelhead put up a good fight, but the chinny wins for the pure adrenelin rush

I agree, if we're talking strictly about the fight. Salmon fight harder than steelhead that's for sure....but I'm talking about the entire river fishing experience for each.

you can't compare the two in the river, one is full of energy, the other is dying, you have to compare apples to apples

right...if we're debating strictly the fight of the fish. my original post should have been more clear.
ON THE RIVER, which do you prefer to fish? Salmon or Steel....

depends on what river.....i mean a fresh fish on a big wide river, isn't going to be the same as a fresh fish on our local creeks.......

I think more research is required in this matter before any vote is called! Pick any 5 rivers and report back Dec 1, 2014!!
