Hey guys,

i recently found a deal for a 4-hour rental cabin (for 8-12 people) with all equipment included (tackle, poles, bait, bbq, life jackets etc.) and all holes are drilled.. I just need some pointers on how to fish, what to do when fish is caught, safety precautions and what i should use. the deal expires march 1st. My fishing day would like to be in February as i have exams in January. We are going to be 9 people appx. (don't know if my other friend's are going to come.) And if anyone has been here (Minet's point, Barrie ON), what kind of fish can i expect.

thanks

I can't speak for that area, but tactics will depend on what fish you are targeting. I usually ice fish on Lake Nippissing and have caught perch, pickerel and lake herring while jigging just off the bottom with minnows. I've also had success with small spoons or tear drop jigs tipped with minnows. Watch out for mudpuppies, I've caught a few of those as well. Gross.

If I catch a fish that you want to keep, I usually toss it outside, but make sure not to leave them out too long without cleaning and filleting them, as processing them while they're frozen is not fun.

Safety precautions - keep valuables away from the hole, as it seems that in ice huts, there is some sort of weird gravitational pull towards the hole. I've lost more gear than I'd care to admit to the bottom of the lake.

Good luck and have fun.
