Attempt at a different tie... Marabou is brutal to work with lol. Spent more time trying to grab the little marabou feathers floating in the air and going all over the room than how long it took to tie this. Turns out i should've dampened it a bit. 

 

 

 

Eye is way too crowded. i didn't tighten up the marabou as much as i should've i guess. Plus there's far too much of the stuff i think.. it looks.. messy.

Actually you're not far off there! Like you said the eye is a little crowded, really try to keep the wraps of thread to a minimum, only need three to secure. If after you'e trimmed your material as close as possible you still have some left wrap back into that material to bring it back away from the eye. You're doing very well for how new your are to this!

Thanks for the boost of confidence Chris! I can see what you mean about the less wraps. Gotta keep it slim. I wrap it wayyyy too many times lol. 

 

Worked on a second one. Orange, Pink and Blue. The blue looks like maybe i picked the wrong marabou from the pack. Orange and pink look finer, but the blue might push water a bit more. We'll see.. only way to find out is to take it out and try it.

That is actually by far your best! Try throwing a little hint of flash in there as well. The "correct" way to tie these is actually to wrap the marabou as a hackle, this way you wind up with very little waste at the head and the fly stays neater. At this point it's just for looks, the fish will hammer that fly either way.

I fish the marabou flies a lot in Nova Scotia for Fall Atlantic Salmon.  Glad to see these will work for me when i visit in Mid October.  I am a big fan of rabbit strip muddlers as well in bright colours.

I will settle for anything that will give me a tight line   I am a C and R fisher so not going to kill anything.  Just looking to get some fly fishing therapy while visiting the inlaws.

I used the wrong hackle for the white portion but ah well. Good way to learn materials and what they do. Should've been longer.. will have to pick some up.

Nothing wrong with that front hackle. Its big enough to create a vortex for the marabou. Are you using another material under the marabou to prop it up?

I use a dubbing ball of icedub or arctic fox, sometimes followed by a couple wraps of schlappen or dyed guinea. Wrap your first bou basically right against the dubbing ball

Ya,  I use coated braid hook link material designed for carp fishing actually.  I choose it because I like the stiffness and strength of the coated braid, and i have loads of it sitting around.  You can use any braid, as long as its 15lb+ or dacron would work fine, really doesnt matter.  Im sure you could use mono if you wanted.

 

What I do is once the fly is complete, I cut off the hook point of the first hook with sidecutteres so that there is only one hook trailing in the back of the fly.  no need for two hooks.  Plus i fish waters that are single barbless no live bait, so definitely a no no

just a note:  What I said above may be the "wrong" way to do it, but I generally do things my way no matter what people say, as long as it works for me, I generally freestyle a lot of my dyi projects/builds/ties etc (unless of course they require precision, ie woodworking)
