hey everyone i'm going ice fshing in Orangeville and i was wondering if any one has been or heard anything about the fishing - if it is good or not? also, what would be good for pike? the lake a is really shallow

you mean island lake? there are huts set up there, fish around them, I've done ok for pike maybe 5 a day or so but hammer handles around 2-4 pounds, i don't fish it whole lot, i mostly fish northern lakes, so there are probably guys that could help you out more then me, my bud was there on saturday and got nothing though, s i guess its slow now.

ok and thanks man what lakes do u usually if you dont mind me asking i have have only fishing simcoe for  and island lake when i was really  for small  for icefishing

I was there mid January and rented a hut. Not sure if that's what you're doing, but either way, the people there told us the "left side" is getting good results so they set us up on the further hut they had and we pulled 2 pike in about 4 hours. It was still fun even though the numbers weren't crazy.

 

They have minnows you can buy if you want to use live bait and jig them.  I use a verticale lure and tipped it with a minnow and that's what got us the attention of them pike.  If i remember correctly.. it was the buck shot spoons. 

 

Cause a bit of a commotion in the dirt at the bottom and that'll get some attention as well.

I was there on Sunday past...landed one in a couple of hours that I was out there. Nice little hammer handle a couple pounds or so. I spoke with a few people and they were anywhere to 3-5 iced for the few hours that they were out there. Yes, it is a very shallow lake. I was just jigging with a plastic on...so who knows if minnows would have done better. I've rented huts there a couple of times and they are nice...roomy and warm with the heater in them. Sunday I just walked out with my gear...just to give a go for a while. LOL...but, I live about 10 minutes away.

small lure i like gold tipped with a large minnow then a set line a good distance away with a big minnow, watch the set line, the lure usually word best, if not then try some micro jigs or smaller minnows or just a tail of a big one, if you can only find small minnows put a couple on the hook, I've gotten them on badboys and jigging raps there as well.

I fishh island lake alot during the winter it is closer for me then other lakes the average depth you will fish is 5 to 8 ft real shallow they have pike perch bass and crappie pike are small a big pike out of island lake is anything over 24inches 29 inches being my biggest i have got a perch out of there up to 13 inches

but they are usally anything from little dinks up to 10inches i dont get much crappie there but if you can find them they can get fairtly big i have seen 18inch crappie come out of the lake we get a bass every now and then out of season of course have to go back bass range from 2lbs to 5lbs have seen bigger come through the ice

i usally use tip ups or jigs for pike and minnows for perch and crappie not huge fish in the lake but there lots of them i have had 20+ pike days and about the same for perch hope this helps

Hello guys.

 

Just went there a couple of days ago. 6 of us rented 2 heated huts. My first time ever in a hut. None of us are fans of ice fishing but we thought we'd give it a go for the first time in years.

 

We had 9 lines going with minnows except for one which I had a spoon on jigging once in a while. We could see the bottom in our hut as it was only 6 feet and no weeds in that spot. And wow that ice was thick.

 

In 4.5 hours we saw one pike stare at the minnow for 10 seconds and decide he didn't want it. Then one of the outside rods was getting pulled down so I went out to check and had a fish on for 10 seconds as I reeled it in. No idea if it was a really small pike or nice perch but it was decent. Anyway, it came off and took the minnow.  And 20 minutes before closing time, my cousin starts jigging 2 lines at once because it's his first time ice fishing and he wanted to get one so badly. And then BOOM! This nice little pikey takes it and my cousin hand lines it out of the hole and it slides across the rectangle of ice in our hut. It cut the line right as he landed it because all that was left was a hook and 1cm of line.

 

Anyway, they were also letting people try snowshoeing for free on family day so that was kind of interesting.
