Hi guys,

finally set up my ST. C imperial 9' 9wt.

I am new to this. I spooled my reel with backing and 9wt line, next question is the leader. Is the normal leader this phesant butt stuff? I forget what it is called but something along those lines, from 0X to 7X or something, and is more of a dark color than invisible fluro color, sail had it for 4.50$

My question is, what lb test do I want? I think I was thinking between 6 or 7.5lb, is that right? I plan on fishing it for steel this spring and then kings this fall (worry about a stronger leader in the fall),

to me, I think I am going to run my 9wt to the 9ft 4x(i think) 7.5lb leader, to 2-3 ft drennan 6lb tip. Am I doing it right?

Newb here to this fly stuff... thanks

Take a look at these, they may help.  4x is too light for your 9wt.  If you are high sticking, look at the part 2 diagram (Great Lakes Steelhead leader)  It's simple and works.

that's fine, depends how you going to fish

if you are drifting egg patterns or beads, a total length of 9 ft leader is usually enough, and for me that tapers from a 25 lb butt section (1 ft) to a 15 lb indicator section (4-5 ft) to a 8 or 10lb fly section (4-5 ft), then i add on usually 1 ft of 8 or 10lb fluoro to attach the first fly, and then maybe another 10 inch section for a second fly

split goes above the first 1 ft of fluoro before fly
