Hi everyone,

I am doing some research for a blog/site we are hoping to launch in the coming weeks called Tripchasers - cataloguing unusual/unique things to do in Ontario. Fish watching (please don't laugh) is high on our list, and we're doing research on three separate topics on Toronto:

1) Watching rainbow trout jump in HR - we'd like to base a 2014 "trip tip" on this Star article - http://www.thestar.c...h winter/March?

2) We've heard a rumour that MNR installed carp barriers on HR and several other rivers in Toronto, and that it's quite a spectacle to see dozens or more of them congregate at barriers as they are trying to go spawn. Does anyone know the details? Sounds like a cool day trip idea.

3) Lastly, we heard of someone in TO trying to organize a carp fishing competition. Google searches did not turn up much - perhaps some folks here know details? We'd love to interview an organizer and feature the event.

Any other unique fish (not necessarily fishing) related tips would be most welcomed - we are looking for unusual things that provide good photo ops, make good stories, and don't encourage irresponsible/illegal behaviour :)

Thanks so much!

i can tell you that 80% of rivers with any sort of barriers and that get trout will have them holding there right now however they tend to jump more as the whether gets warmer. In april you can see them jump quite often at any obstruction.

in May the carp gate at Tommy Thompson Park will have a herd of carp in front of it. The carp gate in the Humber Marshes is brand new and this will be the first year that we will see its effect....expect the carp there in May...we are catching carp in select places now but the shallow rivers like Humber will not see carp in numbers until May. Best of luck!

Yes!!! Indeed, they hover around the gate for pretty much the whole month of May. Easily visible to a viewer. But usually just in smaller groups. Of 3-5 and 5-10 from what I've seen.

As far as a pile up to try and get through the gate in a large herd (like that Youtube video) I've seen that too, but not very often. It will happen in May, and maybe even in June, but its impossible to pinpoint the exact days or times.

Hey nobodies laughing!

At least I'm not. Fish watching is a major part of how I approach my day of fishing ;-)
