I posted this a couple of X-Mas ago and thought it would be appropriate to repost (with some mods) as we all prepare and plan for the upcoming 2014 Opener...enjoy!
==========================================================================================
Twas the night before the Opener, when all through the river,
The temperature was dropping, enough to give us a shiver;
The split-shot were hung near the bobber with great care,
In hopes that Saint Steelie would soon be here.
The 'headers were nestled all snug along the river bed,
While visions of rainbows danced in their heads;
My bro' in his Patagonia, and I in my Simms,
Had just turned on the flashlight to lighten up the dim.
When out on the water there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the shore to see what was the matter.
Onto the river I flew like a flash,
Just enough time to grab my fishing stash.
The rising sunshine on the crest of the melting snow,
Gave the lustre of mid-day to the moving objects down below.
When what to my bewildered eyes should appear,
The biggest f'ing rainbow jumped up so near.
With a little tad of pink cheeks, so lively and such a warm feely,
I knew in a moment, it must be Saint Steelie.
More rapid than any eagle, his headshakes they came,
And he barrel-rolled and somersaulted, and called out the bait name;
"Now Roe-sac...now Pinkie...now Kwik-Fish and Yarn-Fly!
On Maribou...on Trout-Bead...on Woolly-Bugger and Stone-Fly!
To the top of the river water, to the top of the rock wall,
Now splash away...splash away...splash away you all!"
"As the dry leaves from before the last winter storms lie,
When the snow and cold are gone, let us all jump to the sky."
So up to the river-top, the rainbows they all flew,
With the Opener full of fish, and Saint Steelie was in there too.
Merry Opener to all and to all a chrome night... Steel'ED
