Let me know how the Live target works for you..... i am little hesitant about it, not sure if it is just a gimmick or a legit lure. Plus they are pretty pricey.

 

 

Yeah it was 15 bucks ill be pretty upset if I loose it on a snag.. Ill be doing a write up on it next week after we go out for some Teethers.

I picked up some Husky Jerks and that new Live Target lure that mimics a group of bait fish.. Can't wait to try it out.

 

I don't know how to target them here in the Brampton area…It's funny I started fishing because I wanted to catch a Pike!

It's a very cool idea but I doubt fish will see it as a school of fish. I'm sure you'll get some action but it'll just look like a silver minnow at faster speeds.

Also can you recommend a good snap swivel that doesn't snap off when fighting a big fish.

I always hear stories about people loosing fish because of the snap.

Yeah I bet it won't make a difference but I'll be taking mental notes comparing to other lures I'll be using.

As for leaders I will tie directly to my braid or fluro. I wont use a snap swivel with it. But the ones I do buy are mustad ones. Have never had one break even when pulling up snagged lures on tree branches.

I've got some Husky Jerks, Smithwick suspending rogues, and Scatter Raps to try out.  Also going to try some lipless cranks I picked up, a Red Eye Shad and some cotton cordells. I see ppl talk a lot about jerkbaits and spinners for pike, anyone have any luck with the shorter fat style crankbaits? Like Wiggle Warts or KVD 1.5s

I've caught a few pike on those style of crankbaits but for me I like using the thinner stickbait style crankbaits more for pike

I know many people do but I usually only use a steel leader when bait fishing for them, and when there's a good chance to get a 10 plus pounder

I had awesome luck last year with a Yo Zuri black and silver crystal minnow (like an original rapala). 13 pike in one day, largest 31 inches fishing at Marten River just north of North Bay.

ah most people forget about pike since steelhead opener but i for one will try and get out this year whenever zone 16 opens up, should be good

Pump I use braided line, and use a 12 inch wire leader, but use black not silver. When pike fishing, I mostly troll swimming minnow baits. If I am still fishing with live minnows, usually about 6" sucker minnows, I use a 24" 12 lb fluoro leader instead of wire.

Use a leader!!! Or you will lose many lures!! Flouro or steel. Steel can sometimes ruin the action on a lure and it is easier for the fish to see, so I tend to use flourocarbon more often.

I am planning a trip to Pointe au Baril and I will be chucking xraps until I can't feel my arms. A certain colour outproduces all others for pike

I like to use leaders when fishing lures too.  Personally, I like the metal ones with the snap and swivel.in black -- whether it is black steel, or nylon coated steel.  Name brand is probably better so you get the free moving barrel swivel, or else your lure isn't going to move like it should.

 

As for lures.  Hungry May pike go bananas for spinnerbaits.  They'll bend and twist them too so make sure you have some spares and a pair of pliers!  Rapalas: both husky jerks and the classic floating variety for open water.  Wobble/Canadian spoons for sure.  Mepps.... anything that wobbles and or flashes...

i use either 12 pound fluro loader or a really really thin leader, those are hard to find, the thinnest ones i found were in Canadian Tire in belleville, lol. I tend to use fluro in spots where the pike are small, where they are bigger, i always have break offs with the fluro leader so i just switch to a steel leader but those are big pike, you will be fine with a fluro leader in most spots. Believe it or not but i have gotten some of my best pike on a micro jig with a rubber panfish minnow, lol. A close 2nd bait for me is minnows and then mepps spinners in size 3-5.

No leader for me, 45 pound power pro tie direct to spinners, Pike love them, also larger Mepps work well. So  agree with cptronin on the lure selection.

 

If you do use leaders dont by cheap crappy ones YOU will be disappointed! It sis worth the extra buck or two for a good quality one or make some out of 75 pound fluro.

Oh yeah.. Always black or the normal silver.. Just use steel. I've heard and seen people who use titanium leaders when the pike or musky do a ton of head shakes it can cut into their jaw if they are hooked on the other side of the mouth. Less damage the better if doing C&R.

 

I also was thinking of going with a 75 lb fluro instead of a leader too. Might try that this summer as well.

No leader here, just 12lb mono, make sure you get a good hookset and you'll be fine 90% of the time.
