I am leaving friday the 2nd of may headed for the Hilton Niagra . I have all saturday to fish and plan on putting some time in the area . I should not say I am totally new because i have been steelheading 4 times with 0 success . Anybody want to meet up and fish? I am not looking to steel your spot but more looking for guidance to ensure I am doing stuff right . All the sttelhead fishing i have done has been rather shallow runs . This river below my hotel seems alot faster and deeper so I am slightly intimidated but know there is good fishing .

 

If you want to meet up saturday morning shoot me a email at [email protected]   . I am not willing to pay to be guided but if ever you are in Ottawa I would be willing to return the favor by going fishing for some bass in my stratos .

Not sure if the river will be fishable then.. Ice breakers are breaking the huge sheet in Lake Erie and the river is gonna get messy and unfishable for a while. They started this at the start of the week and there's lots up there.

I have fished 4 times in just this week and I'm probably still considered new so don't worry about it!  Not sure about the particular rapids you have to deal with, but I usually start with a standard float rig with a decently long leader.  Fresh roe bags with a bead (colour depends on water clarity).  I use the bead for attracting the fish to the roe bag.  I then do some drifts and adjust my float until it starts to lean to the side (basically lets me know my split shots are rubbing against the bottom of the river).  Then I adjust the float so it's as close to the bottom as possible but allows the float to stay vertical (split shots right under the float also help it to balance in fast flows).  Then it's all a matter of covering the most amount of water.  Casting from the far shore and bringing it closer and closer and repeating the process until you have covered every drift possible in your spot.  If no takers, than move on.  Eventually you might get a fish and remember the drift you used to get it, that might indicate underwater cover or an area where more trout might be holding.  Drift that spot until your arm gets tired, if there aren't any more fish you can move on!

 

Those would be my tips to help you get into some fish.  So far this week, this technique has given me at least 12/25 landed/hooked trout

Are you going to the whirlpool or the glen? Ive only had experience at the WP tho. There you want about 17 ft under neath your float, or just move your float down until you drag bottom.

Lots of ice a couple days ago to wash down the river won't be in fishable for a week or so !! But grimsby and st Catherines have fishable water

I was at the pool a week ago, and there was a ton of icebergs floating by making it very difficult to fish.  I saw only 1 fish caught in 4-5hrs, with maybe 10 ppl fishing there
