i would make sure to keep a yoga mat with the tackle, but unfortunately there was no grass that grew in that spot this year, let alone i was fishing by myself and had to lay the fish down on dirt, but before the release i made sure i rubbed off the dirt and clear up the gill plates, thats the best i could do, if i had company i would have just took it out of the net for a quick photo and send em on his way, but i really appreciate the tips and knowing what to do better next time, and no i dont keep carp, didnt have the intention of eating them, the only species ill take once in a while would be smallies, walleye, steelhead, and the ocassional plate size sunfish, all preferably under 3 lbs,Nice fish!
Hey do you release your catches?
If you do try to bring some sort of mat next time, to protect your catch
Carp are big heavy fish, so it wont take much for rocks and twigs to damage or pierce their eyes or scales, not to mention rub off their protective slime-coating. You might catch that same fish sometime down the road with some lacerations, and or some other unsightly marks on its left side because it wasnt protected the first time out of the water.
Just giving a heads up
All part of having fun, but also taking care of these creatures, thats why were on this thread

i couldnt agree more on the carp handling procedures! thanks!!! and i really apprecite the tips for using the centerpin, but the reason i use this baitcaster/planer board reel is because it has a clicker, free spool then drop the clicker and i saved myself 30 bucks for the bite alarm, but the bite alarm looks more cool! IMO, i really appreciate your help and tips, hopefully theres 1000 fish on this thread before it freezes over for the winter,Agreed, should use a landing mat, or at least rest the fish in some soft grass. but nonetheless, CONGRATS classic drifter, always feels good to kill the skunk. Im sure thats just one of many many more for you. Once you go carp, its hard to go back to smaller fish. For me its, steelhead, and carp, thats all i care for.
A tip for the landing mat, even just a garbage bag would help , just make sure the bag is wet before laying the fish on it. That will keep the slime from rubbing off. after you can use the garbage bag to clean up any mess that you brought or found. or just throw the bag out. I have a proper landing mat that I use to weigh the fish in as well, its a bit excessive in my opinion, but when im on a long session catching lots of fish, I peg my mat into the ground with tent pegs, setup my camera by the mat and it makes things easy, also keeps the fish nice and clean for the pics. Carp can survive lots of abuse, and being out of the water for a long time. but its best to do as little harm as we can.
Anyways, congrats again! I like the baitcaster. thats a good reel for carp since it has the free spool clicker thing. perfect for carp! For a real challenge, try your center pin sometime! its awesome. you could rig up the same way you did to catch that fish, or you could use a float rigged for the depth of the lake, with a small sinker to keep you on bottom. corn on a small hook. throw a handful of corn over your float. wait for the float to go down. you can have great success on any pier or marina. The biggest carp fall for this trick all the time. ive heard of 40lb carp being caught this way.

I bet there will be! lots of new carpers and sooooooooooooooooo many carp to catch! Lets get em!
With the pin, you can rest it on the ground or on a stick and turn on the clicker as well. once you have one on you will here it scream. Baitcaster is good tho too
I picked up a daiwa setup for carp at lebaron for less than $100. 12' carp rod and the reel has that freespool switch thing. Lol. Came close to losing rods and reels many times before. It's nice to be able to relax now.
Good setup. you dont need to spend a fortune on carp gear, the cheapest of carp rods work great. $50-60 . you may find that you wanna spend a bit more on the reel because the cheaper ones wear out, but nonetheless, sounds like your in for a good summer!

I wanted to test out my new ultra lite St. Croix Trout Series rod so I went out to the ol' carp hole after work yesterday. This little guy took me across the entire pond and must have pulled out over 150' of line, it was a blast on the light rod. I could feel every headshake from the little 4" bass I incidentally caught so you can imagine what this fish felt like. Pushed my 1000 series reel to the limit! lol

^These fish are sooo much fun! Anyone who has caught one will agree, once you've caught the first one, your just itching for the next one, and the next one after that..
But its up to us to keep the fish we enjoy healthy and happy for generations to come.
Commons are considered invasive in Ontario, but imo that opinion should be re-evaluated.... Its been a while anyway.
Europeans brought Commons over to North America in the late 1800's as a food source, and although the appetite for them quickly diminished, they have since thrived and flourished here.
I think people have directed an unfair bias towards them. - As a garbage 'mud fish' that eats and destroys lakebed vegetation that other species rely on to procreate... However, I have witnessed first hand this statement to be slightly misleading. (At least where I fish)
Perhaps my opinion is a tad premature, but in their defense:
There are hundreds, if not thousands of carp at any given time (year round) at Tommy Thompson park, and you can clearly see large groups of them cruising right there at the surface of the water, sometimes up to ten at a time, this gives the impression that this place has become a sanctuary or atleast a common pass-through for many local carp. There are also countless amounts of jumpers that thrash completely out of the water like dolphins on a regular basis, readily viewable to a discerning viewer.. however I have noticed that other species also thrive in the exact same waters as these 'lakebed destroyers'
Slap a different lure on and there is an abundance of Perch, Pike, Largemouth bass, Crappies, Sunfish, Bullheads, Rainbow trout, White Bass, etc to be caught as well.
-I once carp fished a year back in between two action casting-anglers who literally pulled out fish on their first and second casts right beside me; one a White bass and the other a Pike, on his second cast.
So tell me, if Carp destroy everything around them that prevent other fish to co-exist with them, then why is there such an abundance of other species at TTP that thrive in peace along with these thousands of Commons?
The point I'm trying to make is: their living creatures who give us fishermen great enjoyment, so lets not treat them like 'garbage'
-Use a mat to protect them during unhooking, dont weight them unless you can do it safely without injuring them, and just like any other living thing on this planet: Treat them with the respect they deserve!
They are here for our enjoyment, so lets practice safe and respectable carping guys!
Keep posting your pics guys! Love seeing them out of the water in good hands, such cute faces sometimes

NADO that aint a little guy!
It may not be a small fish, but at 7-8lbs its a small carp lol. Carp are pretty much the only thing left in this pond/resevoir other than a few bass and sunnies trying to carve out some space for themselves so its pretty easy for me to pop in down there whenever I get some new gear and get a fish on within a minute or two lol.
Carp Addiction, don't get me going on the invasive topic lol.

By all means, share your opinion =)
We all have one and are entitled to it, I'm just saying that for where I fish, I dont really see them as being all that destructive. The carp gate splitting cell one and cell two is a complete failure imo. There are STILL large carp in cell one that are now trapped in there. lol
Trying to control carp-flow is next to impossible, just ask the guys in the states who are spending billions on trying to control the asian carp migration down there. That species is evidently much more destructive however, but as far as commons are concerned, there are usually other species that have learnt to co-exist with them in the same waters. And there are many examples of this in Ontario and in the Gta
