They were imported from Europe in the mid 1800's as a food source. I don't think I'd be eating the 30lbers out of Lake Ontario though.Lol

I only lasted 15mins and then I went to stalk some pike.

Carp isnt action fishing man, you spend alot of time bombing your swim with chum, then setting up your rig, but once your cast you set it and forget it.

 

I dont usually let my cast sit out longer than 30-40 mins. But I've had many occasions where a bite happens just I went to retrieve my line after waiting for a half hour.

 

If you cant take sitting and starting at the horizon then bring a book! Or I tie some rigs, have a beer, EAT, lol just enjoy the moment because.........

 

Once that bite DOES happen, it makes the wait totally worth it!

How successful are carp outtings to an area that hasn't been baited up for days/weeks..etc before hand? Would i waste my time if i just went and tried new spots? 

 

This fish just boggles my mind but it's on my list of fish to catch currently.

I usually never chum an area, but if I do then its one day before I fish. Chumming for me is really only necessary in heavily pressured areas. -your trying to make the fish pay attention to your bait rather than someone elses.

 

Other than that, a common carp will usually home in on anything that smells and looks good to them (Carp have EXTREMELY good vision) but you have to be a patient angler as well. (Try adding vanilla extract to your bait)

 

The carp likes to investigate your bait. It might pick it up as soon as it hits the lakebed, spit it out, then the same exact carp may come round again twenty minutes later to give it another taste. They are very very skiddish and frighten easily.

 

Most important things to remember for myself are to:

 

A: NEVER move your bait presentation as soon as it hits the lakebed, and

B: ALWAYS feel the drop. (Make sure you know your rig is landing onto gravel rather than into weed beds)

 

Follow these two simple steps and I can 100% guarantee you will catch more carp

Q2: I was youtubing some rigs and saw one called a pop up rig. That looked pretty interesting. Have you ever used a rig like that?

can one of you who knows send me some info about how to go for carp on the fly?

like what kindof gear you had and maybe some flies that are known to work?

Bigger the better. So def go with the 9'6"

 

I use a 12' carp rod.

 

Basically any medium/heavy type rod of any length will land a carp, but for myself personally, 90% of consistent carp catching is in all in the cast. -not your rigs, line, bait or any of that.

 

If you are just blindly casting into nothing with no technique, you will catch LESS carp i promise

 

There is ALOT involved in casting for carp. And it usually starts with how big your rod is. lol
