hi i went fishing yesterday for channel cats.

i was using a big shrimp

i was fishing on a river that come form lake erie.

and i caught a fish. a fish i never seen before.

i was big must be about 1ft 6inch weighed about 4lb

it looked like a carp.

but it was silver.

it had a spinny fin that when from about the back of the head to the rear of the fish. big fin and sharp spines.

it didnt have a mouth like a carp.

kinda dead, didnt give me a fight at all, i was just pulling in dead weight. and it didnt hit the shrimp like a carp or a cat. it was if there was a log hitting my line it was hard at all..........

i through it back since i didnt know what it was. didnt get a picture since i didnt care. but know its bugging me.

anyone know what it is?

Sounds like a quillback sucker. They are a native fish. Not a lot get caught.

In Ontario, we have Smallmouth Buffalo, Bigmouth Buffalo and the rare Black Buffalo.

My immediate reaction was Smallmouth Buffalo since they are occasionally caught by anglers while fishing for Channel Catfish and Freshwater Drum...especially in a couple of certain major Lake Erie rivers. They are common, but not often caught.

Description of the fight is also inconsistent...since Buffalo certainly fights hard...even harder than carp...and don't come in like a dead fish.

Dusty also said it wasn't a Quillback Carpsucker, which is somewhat similar to carp and buffalo, since it didn't have the long spike at the head, I'm curious to see what it really is.

looked like this http://www.ikijime.c...ilver-perch.jpg

but had a mouth like a smallmouth buffalo, no whiskers like carp.

but it had the spiky fins like the silver perch and they were all about the same length.

the fins never went down they stood up. and the find actually peirced my boot when i brought it in and went into my foot lol

Neither Grass Carp, Silver Carp, Bighead Carp or Black Carp has a dorsal fin that starts at the head and continues to the rear end of the body. Dorsal fins of those species are relative small...akin to trout and salmon in shape.

What's a White Carp? Sounds like the unicorn.

Take a picture next time...but I guess since you weren't interested in it originally...it shouldn't bother you too much now anyways.

theres color variations of black red and white that koi can have. some can all white, though its pretty rare

but i havent seen a koi with spines on it. awesome fish though, they do fight well.

caught one by accident one year at lake acquitane while fishing for cats. was a hell of a fight

Lake acquitane damm have been there since the early 80's brings back fond memories though.
Do you think it could have just been a silver bass?

I was thinking silver bass as well...its not common for them to get that big here; but I know of a few cases where they were caught. I know they do get quite large in the US.
