to all the guys saying tubes for smallies, try flippin tubes for largies... I prefer that method over creature baits and jigs, tubes rigged texas penetrate cover much easier and catch fish just as well

I was targeting Crappie at Professors Lake this evening and could not get over the size of the Bass that are cruising around the drop off.   I'm estimating some of them to be 7-8lb.   I will be starting my Bass season at Lake Simcoe, but Professors Lake will be my urban Bass fishing home this year!

That rod is a good all around setup for a number of species. Where are you fishing? I can point you out better on what lures to use. But the lures you mentioned work for a variety of species.

Going to island lake on Sunday to check the place out. Bringing just a travel box cause I want to walk around the lake. Not taking my tackle box to big so I want to travel light. I have this on mind 3 mepps # 2 & 3, hula hooper, 2-3 booyah spinners, some soft baits and 3 cranks. Which I have to find to buy a place for these sucker. Hopefully I'm bring the right lures that day.

Hey just wondering, what part of Professors Lake do you go to? I have only been there once, I went on the side opposite of the beach area (at the bottom of that hill with a park), it didnt have very much room to cast and tons of trees, branches and weeds. Ive checked out a lot of places in Brampton some of it looks great, but Professor is a spot I want to revisit.

I cannot wait to get out for my bass fishing season for Smallies and of Large Mouths! It is going to be great with having a nice new set of waders to get into those nice river spots with nice deep pools for the smallies. I love living on the Grand River system so many nice areas. Especially on the smaller rivers too, like the Nith and Conestogo. Wish everyone the best for opener! Anyone recommend colors for tubes and which sizes. I am newer to those. I seen in there 1/8oz jigs are good size to not get snags. Colors would be a great piece of advice.

Kingpin, here's one rule of thumb for colours:

 

Clear water, bright sunny days: natural bait/fish colours.  Green, brown, grey, "pumpkinseed", "watermelon".  Something that matches he local baitfish or crayfish

 

Overcast days: white/pearl, chartreuse

 

Chocolate milk water: blues/blacks

 

 

One good way to gauge size is match the tube jig to the size of the water.  Shallow gets 1/8 - 1/4oz, deeper gets 1/4 - 3/8oz.

I have caught around 3 OOS so far this year and I found that a 1/16 oz jighead with white tubes seemed to really attract their attention, especially if they get into the shallows.

When OOS bass are sitting over their nest (usually in the shallows), they'll strike anything that comes near it.  That tune changes when they are done guarding it.

 

That's why its so important to avoid OOS bass, but it does happen time to time.  Just explaining why you hammer some big lunkers on tiny little offerings in the spring/early summer.  It's not on the menu... its just too close to the guarded nest.

Seeing a lot of wacky rigs out there. TTP had atleast 5 guys and gal fishing yesterday with wacky worms and booyah spinners...

 

Freaking amateur hour if you ask me, 5 people casting in the exact same spot is a recipe for a disaster. Too much line traffic

 

Combined they pulled out atleast 10 largemouths and executed some painful handling techniques. -beaching, and horizontal lip grabbing.

Very disappointing. And the whole bunch chatting up a storm about how 'professional' they are.

 

Gutless. Was very close to calling MNR for a surprise inspection. Next time I might not be so friendly...

Had a tough time Saturday, went out to Seymour lake. Spent most of the day pitching jigs and 7" worms but also spent a bit of time with a crank and frog. I landed a couple but nothing over a pound, had a 3 or so lb smallie on but lost it. Think it may be time to fish a little north of there.

Only thing I caught on Bass Opener, Sunday morning down at bayfront on a 5" baby bass BPS Stick-0 Texas rigged weightless.  For a moment I thought I had an Ontario record LM on my line lol

Hey guys was out canoeing the cockshutt bridge area in brantford yesterday , the water is a lot deeper and less clear in this area (almost like chocolate milk) seen a lot of fish jumpin and found some decent spots. What would ya guys recommend for these conditions?

LOL, yup. Found a tonne of them sunning themselves in pads on Saturday, was kind of hoping I'd put my jig infront of a mudder haha.
