I have never tied chicken liver in cheese cloth. I run my hook through a good size chunk 3 or 4 times then lob it out and let the cats find it. I do carry a small container of water and a cloth to wipe the blood off my hands after baiting my hook to try and keep the crud off my rod, otherwise I start attracting flies. Let us know if the cheese cloth works out for you .I can't, at this moment, think why it wouldn't work.

forget the cheesecloth, use the same mesh you'd use for roe bags

hmm, i went today to a different spot were they have channel cat derbys and my friend got a 8-9lb cat. i didnt get anything but a stupid sheephead.
multiple people were fishing the same area and they went up river and near snags and didnt catch anything.
im thinking tho it that they finished spawning and are now heading back. but im gonna still try the place i usually go about 1hr other direction.
i thought the roe squares would be too small thats why i went cheese cloth. well if cats are out then bass is coming up next week so that will be fun

I use the bag mesh for it as well as other stuff prone to falling off the hook. Even tied some corn bags for carp the other week

Pick up the Suffix 17lb/100yards mono for $2.50 at the Dollarama.
Add a couple yards to your braid and see if that helps.
searched so many dollaramas for this send some my way. Just can't get ahold of it...

Ive been catching Channel Kitties for years. Probably caught 50 this year. Whats a leader? Lol. Tie my hook directly to 8 lb mono. Works great. Sardine minnows or worms for bait.

yea for me shrimp works the best. i found out something too. cats dont smell the things that we smell. we may smell it and call it nasty but the cats to smell that way its more of a chemical smell not a odor. we smell through air, and the water transmits things differently so what they smell can be something totally different.

I can't comment on channel cats, but I can say with 100% certainty that carp (also bottom feeders) do detect line, and also have very sensitive mouths.
I've watched carp in clear water as they avoid one bait attached to a heavy, visible line, and moments later readily suck up the second presentation only a few feet away from the first, that was attached to a light, low-vis leader.
I've also watched carp suck up baits attached to large hooks and immediately spit them out, while sucking up and swimming away with (without spitting out) baits attached to small hooks on a slack line. The difference in this scenario is that they didn't detect the unnatural presence of a large hook, and didn't feel the tension of the line.
Again, this is my experience from carp fishing, but I would try applying these principles to cats:
1) leader they can't see
2) hooks they can't feel
3) some slack in the line, so that you can set the hook before they detect the line and spit.

Yesterday...20lb braid main, 8lb fluoro leader (~20" long), a couple of split shots, bouncing 1/2 a worm along bottom. Not big, maybe 16in...but caught two within 2 hours when the water was murky/muddy and the current was strong where I fished. Not the place where you would find the big kitties...but technique is just the same. Wasn't looking for kitties...they just came knocking.
There is so much knowledge share here. If you want to learn, better have an opened mind. Otherwise, just continue what you were doing.

I wouldn't doubt one bit that they don't smell the same as we do but the fact still stands, the stinkier or more odour a kitty picks up, the more likely it's going to come to it. That's what they do by nature.. hence why they are perfectly ok in absolutely murky water. It's how they do!

Cats are very much a go to when nothing else is biting. If they can smell it. they will take it. Set up a gear for my son to get him some panfish while i fish for bass...6lb mono bobber, 4lb leader. no sinker.
Thats an awesome place for kids
