Was fishing in a trib and we saw an abandoned jon boat right where the water goes shallow and it was stuck on the bank of the creek. So I got out and checked it out.

The cable lock was cut. It was dirty inside. There were 2 dozen tadpoles swimming around in little pockets of water in the boat, including the cup holder. I turned it over and saw no cracks or damage anywhere.

I was at this spot 10 days earlier and it wasn't there so I figured it had been there for a few days only and not longer. And not like it was just put there that day since it was so dirty and the tadpole thing.

Later on I phoned the cops and they said they'd check it out. Took them quite a while to have a look but they called back and said nothing was there. This was the day after and this was the middle of the week.

First reason I called was to asking if it was reported missing. There are only a handful of houses lining this river and I hit this river quite often. Don't recall ever seeing this boat. Even if it was taken for a joyride, there were no oars or even oar locks. No sign of motor or battery.

Second reason was because I was wondering if it would be finder's keepers if it hasn't been reported.

I'm curious as to who went and got it. They'd have to bring oars and oar locks or a motor and battery. And the closest parking to this is a 5 minute walk. I suspect someone noticed it while boating and decided to come back and tow it maybe.

Naw - someone simply left their boat stashed for further use.  Lotta stashed canoes and boats everywhere.  From my understanding they need to be registered/signed up to be stashed on crown land.

That's the kind of thing I figured people would do in the country. But this was in the city. I think it would be pretty naive if that is what they were thinking. But the cut cable lock is a curious thing. And same with the tadpoles. Wonder how they got in there.

Looks like a great boat for ponds. I'd say the boat was stolen and set adrift, then the thieves retrieved it later after they were sure the heat was off.

Most likely stolen due to the cut lock. Probably some kids taking revenge on someone and stealing it and leaving it in the water to float away lol

Best bets to leave it alone.
