@shawarma. keep in mind this is all my opinion..
right now the most productive thing you could toss is a green/brown bugger. thats for the bigger browns. black if the waters cloudy
youll get tons of little guys and the odd decent sized one on any dry that even slightly resembles whatever mayfly and/or caddis is currently hatching. brooks browns bows and atlantics. since most of the water is faster moving then a lot of rivers, they dont really have too much time to examine your fly. if you know what i mean..
i find the bigger fish prefer a more steady food source rather then focusing on what may or may not be on the surface. they tend to rely more heavily on subsurface high protein food unlike the smaller guys who will just smack anything that moves. if you are finding there no fish rising and the bugger just aint getting any action, fall back to a pheasant tail nymph/something similiar (other nymphs work too but the pheasant tail works best for me)
you can observe this behavior yourself. sit there and watch a pool, see all the little fish going nuts on the surface but the bigger brown/bow in the same pool is just sitting in the feeding lane moving very slightly left or right to grab things floating by underwater rather then the surface.
i know most of this stuff is common knowledge but im sure it can help someone
the hatch charts are fairly accurate and good to follow for a basic guideline of what to bring with you, but nothing beats observation. comparing this year to last year, all the hatches are delayed. so keep that in mind.
anyways i havent met anybody who can go there and guarantee big browns every time but those thing above have gotten me my fair share
