Hey OFF..I'm looking for some advice on what type of line I should be using on my reels.

 

 Rigs:

 Baitcast Daiwa megaforce twitchin 7.1:1 on a MH fast Basspro Bionic Blade rod

 Baitcast Abu Garcia Revo SX 6.4:1 on a MH fast Veritas rod

 Spinning Shimano Senora 4000 on a M fast Shimano Sojourn rod.

 

 I plan to use the shimano spinning reel for fishing senkos and plastics,

 the daiwa reel for spinnerbaits and the revo for everything else.

 

 I currently have sunline braid on all 3 reels with flourocarbon leaders but they're all due for new line and

 I honestly don't know that much about choosing the right line.. If someone could explain what the strengths/weaknesses of mono vs flouro vs braid that would be great.

And any reccomendations on what line would work best for each setup I have would be greatly appreciated.

Spool up with power pro braid and a fluro leader. Don't spool your entire rod with fluro has tons of line memory. Fluro is invisible to the fishes eye. Mono not so much. Mono has way more stretch so if you stretch it too much the line becomes weaker and spirals or winedy then fluro, braid has zero stretch no line memory, super sensitive, super strong and resists fraying against rocks or other cover while mono or fluro will break if the edge is sharp enough pretty easliy if a fish is on.

Throw braid and a 6ft leader on all of em.

To be honest, stick to 15-20 lbs power pro braid on any of your spinning set ups. As for Baitcasters, I tend to use nothing less than 40 lbs power pro. Anything less will cause backlash. For using a frog or flipping a jig I use 65 lbs braid. Anything else just stick to 40.

Mono is the good all around main line imo. cheap and effective

it stretches a bit. think of it like a rubber band in a sense.

i personally always use mono unless im ripping a jig through some weedbeds or trolling. its very forgiving when you make the mistake of palming too hard or setting a hook too hard

 

Braid doesnt stretch and has no memory

it is excellent where youll be using things like jigs where you need that quick response time or when you want more sensitivity.

the only downside is its a bitch to get untangled compared to mono. especially on the smaller diameter braids. also its a lot more expensive.

 

anyways id say put some braid on the revo and use it for my sensitive/jig fishing and mono mainlines on the other two. thats what id do anyways

 

always use flouro as a leader leader. never a mainline

 

as for brands power pro seems to be popular with braid. and sufix siege is great mono

Powerpro powerpro powerpro! Better in all views than anything else! Casts far, doesn't damage guides, no sensitivity, thin diameter, only downside is: its noisy.

Thanks for all of the advice. I was using 30lb sunline that has a very small diameter. I dont backlash too often but are you saying a larger diameter braid would reduce backlashes? What are the disadvantages of using a heavier line? If its beneficial ill spool both baitcasters with 40 or 50lb.

The leader material i have is the steez 20lb flouro which ive heard good things about.

Another question I have is about high vis line. What are the drawbacks of high vis? I would assume its more visible by fish as well but os that relevant with a flouro leader?

Through research and experience, these are some suggestions.

 

Spinnerbaits, big cranks, big spoons = 17 - 20lb mono = MH casting rod

Heavy jigs, heavy worm rigs, slop frogs = 50 - 60lb braid = MH - H casting rod

Cranks, twitchbaits, surface plugs, light spoons, light jigs = 10 - 12lb mono = M casting rod

Dropshot rigs, tube jigs, twister jigs, worm jigs, senkos and whacky ricks, small twitch baits, other light finesse rigs = 20lb braid = ML - M spinning rod.  Tie a mono or fluoro leader of 18" or so.

 

In your case, try stringing your mid speed reel with mono for cranking and whatever and the fast reel with braid.  If you fish mostly finesse rigs on your spinning outfit, braid for sensitivity.  Buy the good stuff.

Just to add:

 

Mono because it has a stretch.  Good for retrieve baits that can pull out the fishes mouth otherwise.  Buy the mid priced or better for knot strength and memory reduction.

 

Braid because it is sensitive, detects strikes better, tensile strength for winching power.  Keep in mind your leader is what you set your drag for.  No stretch, no memory  Very hard hooksets.  Buy the premium brands for durability and management.

 

Mono leaders are cheaper and work.  Fluoro leaders are more sensitive, less abbrassive, but attention to knot trying, knot strength are something to be careful of.   A little more expensive.  Marginally less visible in water.  Could make a marginal difference in a competition when prize money is on the line.  Its up to you if you want to spend the extra couple bucks.
