Today I spend the better part of an afternoon and evening checking around the local tribs. I was having no luck so I decided to check out a local small pond which was close to home. It was mostly thick weed beds from the bank until approx. 12ft in. After throwing a few small crappie jigs into the mix and pulling out baitfish, I managed to take a big hit from an unknown fish. I was reeling it in fine until it started to get tangled up in the pondweed. After twenty minutes of maneuvering around the lake to try get the fish free and closer to shore, my line gave away and I lost it .It was odd since the line never snapped.. it just felt like the knot finally let go. Such a pain in the butt fighting the first decent fish of the day just to get tangled up in pondweed. Especially when a long fight can dangerously exhaust the fish...
Should I just abandon ship until late fall for this pond.. or should I be equipping myself with a heavy action 7ft rod with braid to rip out the fish. The rod I was using was a 6 1/2ft med action w/ 15lb mono.
Any words of advice (or condolences) would be greatly appreciated!
tl;dr: Finally managed to hook a decent fish, couldn't pull it through the thick weeds lining the pond bank and the line broke.
