There is an extended season, on the eastern tribs this season includes water below hwy 2/kingston road. This season extends to dec 31 and then will start the sesason below the CN tracks... Read your regs and know the areas you fish, no need to ever have to question if an area is open.

When was the last time they didn't have a extended season?

Nothing like a bend in the rod and a sore arm! Glad you got into some, Paul!

yeah i was gonna say that too!!!! lol!!!! A habit that im just starting to correct is keeping my hands off the blank! Nice pics though!

there is a youtube video showing a guy who had a salmon in.
He had his hands way up in the blank. The rod snapped with awful crack. Sounded like a tree branch.
I have seen many snapped rods and i try to remind others to keep hands on the cork only

Not me...

wonder what line & leader he used that didn't snap? I use 6lb leader on salmon and it should break before my rod does. I had rod up and the tip of my rod in front of me...and i'm confident that my leader will break before my rod does. and chrome salmon (fresh salmon) don't underestimate them. they can give Ricky Williams a run for his money...100 yards to TDs

Isn't the job of the rod is to take all the pressure off your line?

That's why we point our rod down to force a break in the leader

that's why I ask, how strong was his line and leader. it seems he was horsing it at the end...before it cracked the rod. And also that rod might have some earlier damage that was aggravated by the 35lb. salmies...

I snapped my okuma Aventa by holding onto the blank. I was trying to horse in a snagged branch and I couldn't reach it by hand. I pulled up and my rod crack in the middle of my 3 piece. I was using 10lb main and 8lb leader.

Breaking a rod sucks

try putting your reel down the cork, I have my reel down to about 6 inches of rear grip cork and about 9-10 inches of fore grip cork so when i fight the fish there is no need to have my hand on the blank, or in some cases guys would get a fighting grip put on their rods 5-6 inches above the fore grip so it would take the stress off the blank.

I snapped a fly rod right in the first ferrule by pulling on the blank while fighting a boot,  what a waste of a rod... good thing warranty covered it.  Single hand fly rods are the worst for fighting huge fish.  no leverage with the cork where it is.  Thats why some salt rods have a fighting grip higher up the blank for fighting big game.

Best bet with the float rod is to move your reel down, if you can, when targeting massive fish.  make some room for your free hand to grab the top of the cork when you feel the need for extra leverage.  My float rod has a fixed reel seat and its only 4-5" from the top of the cork, sucks a bit imo

Check the bend in the blank where the first ferrule is.  I grabbed right there when fighting a boot, SNAP!

Buddy told me 3 weeks ago to test his raven matrix rod to see how it handles and upon setting the hook the rod snapped halfway, good thing warranty covered it but i had to lend him my 10 ft convergence for the day, thanks to back up rods, he never suffered a boring day out! LOL!!! He got the clarus 13ft after due to my strong reccomendation, and so far hes happy with it, i suggested that rod due to lots of bend although it has alot less power than the raven for starters i reccommended him that, IMHO i think it will teach him patience and line handling better cause he couldnt rush or horse the fish around as easy as the matrix would
