I currently have 10lb Trilene XT on a Shimano 4000 Symetre FL reel:

For the rod, I have a Shimano Clarus 9'6 salmon/trout rod CSC96MH2B (med/heavy power, fast action).

 

I am noticing the casting isn't that smooth with the XT line and I am noticing the retrieve isn't that great as well.   I am not a huge fan of braided line, but can anyone suggest a smooth casting line, strong enough for pier fishing for salmon that would pair well with this reel?

Power pro slick 15 lb for me, 15 lb seaguar blue label leader... Lots of people dont use braid but I personally love it, if you want to stick with mono your best bet is a premium mono. Seaguar senshi has slowly become my favourite mono but I also like Pline cxx xtra strong!

I was never a fan of braid until I tried Powerbraid. I use it on my pier setup and have no complaints.

 

FWIW when spooling use the right tension from my experience it really helps the castability. (if that is a word)

Thanks IR4J, for the Seaguar, go with a 12lb?  thats the max mono rating for my reel.

Those ratings are just a guidline for spool size, youd have no problem running more or less.

I've been using 20 lb power pro. @ IR Do you ever break off with the 15 lb?

i use heavy braid, because some people don't know how to reel in their lines, and most of them use mono 30lb braid under tension vs 15 mono? yeah the braid will slice right through, i then run 15lb mono leader about 2ft from the hook so its like braid-to-inline weight-to-mono-to-hook

I've been using 20 lb power pro. @ IR Do you ever break off with the 15 lb?

I haven't yet, I feel braid is much stronger then the package says...

I like a braid main and floro leader. I run blue label like IR4J.

I too have a Symetre 4000 with a 9'6 rod. Can cast a mile with my set up. 40 lb power pro with 20 lb seaguar blue label flouro leader. Have never lost a fish and have never lost any gear after consistently casting spoons, etc.

I run #20 power pro main and #15 floro lead...Seaguar as well...

Everyone here seems to run leaders, I just have been doing straight braid.

Thanks all.  Seems like a 20# mainline (braid) is about the norm, with a fluro leader.  I have never ran a leader when salmon fishing, but perhaps its the way to go.  I'll get re-spooled with some new line today.

Tried a Lake O trib/pier last night.  Quite a few ppl there last night - in 6hrs saw 3 fish landed, 2 hookups.  Frankly I think the fish still haven't come in with full force yet. Haven't seen any doing high jumps in the water yet.

 

Gonna try another Lake O trib/pier tonight.

At the pier I go to, last weekend after the rain the fishing was hot hot hot, about 7 fish in 3 hours. Went again yesterday night and was as dead as a freaking doorknob. They were jumping close in but it seems like when fish jump, they don't bite. Possible something to do with the coldfront or the blood moon. (And no, I do not believe in the blood moon stuff, but that possibly shut the fishing down).

By no means a pro here but I have run straight braid and had no issues finding fish off the piers. Lots of hook ups and landings so far. I even used a steel leader one day as I packed the wrong gear and its the only thing that had a swivel on it with me. I just told anyone that asked that it was incase a pike came along.. lol
