I will be in Toronto a month from today until Jan 3rd. Is it even worth it to bring my fly gear? Is there anything to pursue with a fly during that time frame? I have no desire to fish any other way other than fly fishing for steelhead/brown trout (hell anyhthing). It would be great to hit a stream with some of you guys but I don't want to lug my gear if it really isn't worth it. Thanks guys!

Steelhead will still be in the rivers and fishable for sure. I am sure there will still be a lot of open rivers and plenty of fish to catch come December. That is when I start to enjoy the rivers more. Less crowds, and cold weather. Might just have to slow it down a bit and fish a bit deeper with egg patterns (beads or yarn) and nymphs. Tandem rigs with indicators work well

depends how cold it gets, got one on the fly yesterday with lots of followers and curiosity from others

id bring an 8wt and try for steelhead, no need to bring a lot, steelhead is the only thing you would catch then, could hit the whirlpool but don't know how to fly fish there

Last year most rivers were locked up at the end of December however there is one big river always open about an hour from Toronto. Bring a rod

AK - if it's any easier for you, just bring your wading gear, and myself or a friend can likely hook you up with a rod to use.
Shoot me a PM - would love to at least grab a pint if you're in and around my area (I live downtown TO).

Whirlpool is fly-fishable but sometimes difficult for swinging since direction of current is changing constantly. If you use indicator and about 10 to 15 foot leader you will definitely hook into some fish.

Thanks for all the responses fellas. I'm glad I finally made the trip where some fish are available. Will be great meeting and fishing with some of you guys. Wooohoo can't wait!

Man, you got lucky!
We have been waiting for a rain and rise in water levels for nearly a month(which feels like a year). Its been slow down here but finally getting that rain right now and melt. Assuming we get the next 10mm they are calling for, the east will be blown for a day or two and then its game on.
