Hey gopro users, I just recieved a Hero4 Silver edition for my birthday and I am looking for some tips and tricks from seasoned users. My main question at this time is what setting should I be using if I want to take video all day long? I have two extra batteries so I am hoping to be able to get 6 hours of continuous video...we shall see.

 

Any other tips and tricks for a noob are much appreciated!

I have the same camera, I would suggest fiddling in setup, there's a few options that should improve battery life a bit. When moving from spot to spot, you can stop recording and turn it off. Pump probably has some better advice.

Run at 720p at 60fps I have the hero 3 black and honestly there is not much of a difference in resolution from 1080 to 720. FPS does not really matter either, YouTube always makes videos 30fps. So if you upload a 60fps video always comes out as 30fps. I only have one battery for my GoPro, usually lasts half the day if you film continuously or if you keep it on when its not filming and just turn it on when you want something filmed then it lasts most of the day.

Hey NADO. I have been shooting with GoPros for 3 years now, from the Hero 1- 3. I have not used the 4, and each of the products seems to have a few new features and pros and cons. but here are a few thoughts anyhow... 

 

I shoot in 1080p 30fps and one battery usually covers a day of fishing, (although the Hero Black edition burns battery power much faster than others.) I usually run the camera for the first 5 minutes at a spot, and then shut it down until something actually happens. But if you have 2 batteries you should be fine for 6+hours. 

 

I like this method of filming (as opposed to continuous filming) as it is easier to sort out which clips (files) are what. It also makes you check the lens more often (a few water drops can ruin the prime clip or moment). sometimes running the camera's continuously results in a fog / condensation building in the case due to the heat of the battery. the vented backdoor helps too, just don't dunk it. 

 

I guess the only other tip is that I like to shoot from a stationary or fixed position.. the image quality is so much better, and you can do more with it on the editing  side. so I have mine on a small monopod (just a broken leg of a tripod) and have modified it to have a spike (tentpeg) on the bottom. That way I can roll into a spot and stick the camera down in the mud (or snow)and start fishing and get good angles and the whole shot.

Play around with your camera and use it for a day when not fishing. 

 

Get to know what your limits are and adjust the settings to see what it'll give you.

Hey guys thanks for all the tips. I remembered this thread Friday night at 11:30 and checked in to see if there were any tips. Changed the settings to 720/30fps, it tripled my video storage and made all the difference. I'll keep fiddling around as I go, I definitely need a bigger memory card.

Go with a 64gb...they should be a lot cheaper now.

 

No point of filming all day when you can't store all that data in your memory card.

I just made 20 minute clips and if nothing happened I deleted that clip. It got me through the day but it was annoying having to take it out of the case all the time.

Sync it with your smartphone and use the gopro app.

 

You can delete the clips you don't want without playing with the camera buttons.

On the sd card issue. 64 gig is plenty of space but remember that the speed is also important. I use a lexar 633x which writes the file at 95Mbps. That is super fast and avoids choppy video especially when you shoot at 1080. I paid 60 dollars at best buy. Get three or four batteries and keep them charged. You don't want to miss action late in the day. Hope this helps you. J.

Hey guys, the last couple times ive used my gopro, after connecting it to my computer and deleting the videos/pics that didn't turn out, the camera still says that I have a short time period left to video (e.g. on the screen it would say 1hr25, or something like that) it just doesnt seem to be deleting the data from either the card or the camera. Im kind of stuck lol. I use a macbook. Any tips would be appreciated! Cheers

I think what you're seeing is the battery life left. I could be wrong on this.
