I have a crappy 6wt setup that I used last year for trout and bass. I have a 3wt setup for smaller streams and I want to pick up a new 6wt.

Now when I say cheap, it was a crappytire set from the early 90s with superfly wff line I put on it last year.

haha, nice! Whatever gets you out on the water! I have a 6wt I love, I just lack a sense of direction in terms of learning. Little things like after you cast do you let the fly drift down stream or the order of line setup (ie. dacron, fly line, leader, tippet etc.) always get me.

after you cast, mend your line upstream of the fly, that way the first thing a fish sees is your fly, and not your fly line

What do you mean by mend? take in the slack??

no, when you cast up stream, your fly line is coming down the river first, you want to flip it behind your fly, so that the fly comes down the river first

its the easiest thing you can possibly do, literally use your rod to pick up the line, and flip it back upstream

would this be as the fly is parallel to you but perpendicular to the stream?

yes it is, been trying to teach a friend of mine how to fly fish.  he managed to hook and land his first steel on fly on monday

Congrats to him, I gave steels a go last year but no luck. I landed two bass last season on fly was an awesome experience but a bigger more challenging fish would be an accomplishment!

Try going to a park and setting a hat down on the ground. Use it as a target for target practice and practice casting from all different directions to get used to the wind's effect on your cast. I find there's almost always some degree of wind to deal with when casting. Tie a piece of yarn on your tippet or leader instead of a fly for safety and visibility, and try some casts with a split shot or two on as well, because this effects your casting especially with a 6wt. It's like a golf swing, you're always learning and always tweaking.
