I keep getting emails from a manufacturer about this " nano " material in the latest 40 t graphite or IM 12 . Honestly I have no real understanding of why a high tensile 30-40 t has anything to do with a performance value in a fishing rod.
I am really tempted to pick up a couple next time I am in the area just to see what the difference if any , to what I now use. Obviously price wise they are hundreds less than what I currently use . However I also know most times I am paying a premium just for a name and not actual value.
If any one has insight into this newest technology please join in and share your thoughts.

Graphite "ton", modulus and IM (intermediate modulus)/HM(high modulus) numbers are all just ways to identify the quality of a blank for a given company.
IM6, 7, 8, 9 are identifiers primarily used by Hexcel corporation for their rod blanks. Other companies such as Edge also uses IM and HM to identify rod blank quality, although they are not the same thing as Hexcel or any other company's ratings. Higher number usually means better material, within the same company.

Quite a few companies use IM, or HM, blanks such as Daiwa, Shimano, Berkley and Basspro. Abu Garcia likes to use ton, Basspro uses modulus and IM, and i think ton as well.

"Nano" is also a word bring thrown around a lot when it comes to rods. It holds no meaning to me, since Iv seen quite a few rods claim to contain "nano" material of some kind, but they dont tell you what it is, and you cant find out if its true or not.

Since there is no standard rating system of any sort (not in rod power, taper, blank rating, fishing line rating, hook size, etc) in the fishing industry, the only way to tell if something fits right is to try it.

As far as that new rod of yours, 40ton graphite seems like a mid price range rod ($150-200).

As an example, Abu Garcia's Vengence ($50) claims its made of 24 ton high modulus blank, Vendetta2 ($80) claims of 30 ton high modulus, while the Volatile ($100-140) also claims of 30 ton high modulus, but with nano tech. Judging from Abu Garcia alone, that "nano tech" must be worth anywhere between $20-60. Does it make a difference between the Vendetta2 and Volatile? Who knows.

If that new rod is cheap, and you are willing to try, why not?

It is still a mystery to me . Frankly I have little faith in intermediate modulus or high modulus graphite or Boron and any other number of technologies if the the design is not up to par it matters very little about the graphite content .
Glass rods are a prime example of this. The last fly rods I had in fibreglass where the old philipson blanks and the Lamiglass .
Both very similar in action to the medium fast bamboo rods of Hardy and in fact similar to the hexagonal graphite rods of Bruce and Walker.
I doubt the glass rods would have any where near the tensile strength of any of the medium modulus let alone the im12 graphite.
For me it is not about the material but how the rod performs.
