Pretty tough fishing up in Algonquin Park this past weekend...

I was up there for an extended long weekend and got completely skunked. There was heavy rain storm on Sunday so I didn't expect much but it was still disappointing. Mainly tried for small mouths on shore with spinner baits and senkos and lake trout on a canoe with jigs and power eggs on live bait rig (I did have a depth chart and a depth finder so wasn't completely blind). Neither produced. Mostly fished on Lake of Two Rivers and Smoke Lake. In the end caught few tiny, I mean TINY, fallfish on floats on ultralight setup floating down Madawaska River in a desperation move.

Most likely my lack of experience and unfamiliarity with the area (with the weather to be blamed in very small part) had much to do with it but still disappointing as I was hoping for some excitement. Well, hopefully try again next year...

You spent a weekend in one kick butt park - fishing can be tough there. I hope you still had a blast except for the crappy weather

That's tough to hear. I've read some reports about fishing up there and I have it on my bucket list for this year *fingers crossed*

The larger lakes close to Hwy 60 are pretty fished out.
Your best bet probably would have been hiking into a stocked Splake lake.

Best fishing in Algonquin is April (after trout season opens) through early June.
After that the trout will be deep and only come to surface on cool evenings and mornings. However, i have seen ppl have success for Lakers using bottom bouncers in summer.

The more portages you cross, the better the fishing gets.(usually)

there's a couple of small lakes not too far off the highway 60 corridor that have great trout fishing all summer. but the main lakes that have campgrounds on or near them can be very tough.

you really got work for the good fishing up there(footwork\canoe).

hopefully the sights smells and sounds were enough to make it a great trip though ;)

Algonquin Park...hmmm. It's suppose to be really good up there. I remember being inexperienced fishing with a zebco spincast I bought from walmart 10 years ago and fought 3-5lb smallies there using only a firetiger #3 mepps.

The camping was excellent as always. Wee bit wet but not too much of a bother when you're prepared for it.

I do love the park, which is the reason for the annual pilgrimage up there.

Didn't have too much time to dedicate to fishing which is why I was limited to the lakes along 60.

While portaging few years back, I had a great time fishing smallies on one of the smaller interior lakes. Nothing big but catching a fish pretty much on every cast. It's quite exciting seeing two or more fish chasing your lure fighting to catch it first in a clear lake. But yeah I hear you guys, the bigger lakes along 60 are definitely more pressured...

And that's the thing - they're big which can take some figuring out. If you keep going to the same lake you will figure 'em out other than that a few portages into a small backlake and you're golden. Love live the park!

Yeah, I have only fond memories of fishing in Algonquin. As with most places, the bigger lakes are harder to figure out and the farther away you can get from pressured water, the better it is. I went on a portage trip and I don't what it is, but there's just something special about catching a fish up there.

I've had luck in Algonquin trolling a 3 way setup for lakers and brookies. Even in the summer.
