What do you guys think works better for trout/stealhead, Berkley Powerbait or fish eggs ?

Try both. Some days they are all over the roe bags, and some days they love plastics. If you are referring to the trout dough, I have never had success on it. My favorite Powerbait plastics for steelhead are the Power Minnow and Trout Worm.

always have both.  But I do prefer powerbait in the cold because the weighted jighead will keep me in the strike zone when they are less active and won't rise for an offering.

Don't have much faith on plastic worms. They do last longer than eggs but not as effective. I'd rather drift san juan worms...

I have been using only beads for the past 3 years, and i hook up almost every single time when no one else is getting anything. However, i will say that your set up is much more important than the bait. Proper line, leader, weight and hook are key, no matter what you have on as bait

Fishing89 has a great point. If God gave me a choice as to whether I could have the perfect presentation or great baits, I'd choose both . Seriously though presentation is just as important as picking the right bait. If you have the perfect bait, but its whizzing past too fast or above their heads then chances are you won't hook into as many fish as opposed to someone who is always hitting the strike zone with a less ideal choice of bait.

I would also add that leader type, strength and length and  are crucial to success. For example fluorocarbon leaders are a must for many reasons:

 

1.) The light refractive index of fluorocarbon is very similar to that of fresh water, meaning it is more "invisible" underwater as compared to monofilament

2.) In addition to being more resistant to abrasion, Fluro has zero water permeability, meaning it does not get damaged over time by simply being in water, as opposed to mono

3.) Fluro is more dense, meaning it will sink faster than mono, allowing for a more controlled and natural presentation.

4.) Fluro does not stretch as much as mono,and allows for greater sensitivity when the bite is light

 

Sorry to go off topic but i feel that a good leader makes the difference between a fish and no fish, no matter the bait used.

 

Oh and if using fluro, PLEASE only use the palomar knot to tie your hooks. It's a special knot designed specifically for fluro line and it holds like a mother  f....
