I caught this recently and was wondering what could've caused it.

A bigger pike or boat prop?

Pike is about 33-35inches

They are tough fish, it could've started from a small scar from a bite or got tangled from a line. I caught a pike with the upper half of it's tail gone. that's one loaded pike pump. getting ready for spawn it seems.

Really liking the bird theory - good call.  I was also thinking perhaps the gashes are from spawning battles?

I honestly think that they could be Musky marks or perhaps a bowfins bit from when it was younger.

Winner chicken dinner. Pike got tangled in the line while fighting.

My guess - boat prop. Here's what big fish bite marks look like. This on a 24" pike.306059_2381739187603_5183993_n.jpg 303614_2381739587613_2624359_n.jpg

BTW: your fish just ate something else. Big belly on it.

They are definitely scars from when it was younger i know that for sure, Could be a bird or a muskie or big pike or bowfin if it was caught from the toronto area.
