Hey,
I've fished the whirlpool for carp for a few years and have had great success and great failures down there. I find I can have double digits days anytime between August and sept; but I have always been skunked from April to the end of July. Does anyone know why this is? Do the carp not come up the river until then?

I don't know about the whirlpool , but I do know that carp greatly change their diet in the summer, that's why fly fisherman catch thrn. Hope that helps.

Saw a guy land one a couple of weeks ago there, just before the cold temps came in. Seemed like a by-catch but it was a carp nonetheless

I have always used dough balls and hair rigs for them down there. I know it's 150 feet deep so they must hang out there year round. I have just found it odd I can't get them to bite for me earlier in the year even though I can catch them elsewhere on the same setup. Once august starts I hit double digits catches no problem

Water temps and the spawn are two factors that affect where carp are at a given time of the year and how much they eat. Carp spawn here in May to June depending on water temps. So they will be in areas where they spawn in the spring. Later as water temperatures increase they will move into other areas.
