Instead of dealing with the crowds at the big tribs I decided to hit up some small stream brookies close to Barrie.

4wt in hand I headed out to my honey hole on Saturday but got skunked. The fish were there but were spooked out by any little bit of movement, wind included.

I decided to try a new spot I've never fished on Sunday and was rewarded almost immediately! Tossing small beadhead nymphs I hooked into a few small guys early on and closed the day with a nice 9 or 10 inch spec. Not bad for a creek I can jump across!




I hope the rest of you fellas had a good time on opener and at least got a fish or two.

That's why I love fishing for them. Love those red spots and blue halos! And nothings better then getting out into the bush and enjoying a nice quite spot that doesn't get a lot of pressure or the trash left behind.

Pretty much. Just letting the stream do the work. In the slower pools I do a slow strip, strip, stop.

If you just want to use a spin casting rod I typically use super light line, a very small hook (barbless) a single split shot and a bobber. Use a little piece of worm and just let it drift in some current. You can also try small spinners.

Brookies love fast moving, clean water. So find yourself a nice little stream and try it out. Underneath bridges are good places to try. Log jams and undercut banks dont hurt either, but are harder to fish. Get hunting and good luck!
