Looking at getting into some fly fishing this year.

Any recommendations on a "starter" combo? Specific lengths, models I should be looking at?

Thanks!

I started out with the Orvis encounter combo. At the time I think it was 200$ for the rod reel case and line. Ready to go. The price went up a bit but I was happy with it for starting out.

Typically 9ft length covers most fishing well. What species are you looking to use it for?

Look into a package deal (Rod, reel & line) since buying separately can add up quickly (actually anything fly related adds up quickly). You can get some decent startup sets from Cabelas, Redington, Orvis in no particular order. I went with a Redington Crosswater for mine.

Weights range from 3-4 (native trout) to 9-10 (salmon). It depends on what you're going for and the types of baits you will throw. Would recommend something in the middle, such as a 9 foot ~6 weight for bass and larger trout.

Orvis or TFO have great starter kits and if you actually fall in love with fly fishing, you won't feel the need to upgrade right away as they are pretty darn good.
