Hey there OFF, first post! Looking forward to being part of the community.

Some introduction, I'm 24 years old and have not fished since I lived in FL when I was about 8 or 9. This year would be my first season fishing since then, so I grabbed some gear I bought a few years back (and never ended up using until now), and decided to head over to Grenadier Pond this afternoon. Well, I caught my first fish since the saltwater FL days! Kind of a flop in regards to the legalities, since I ended up catching a bass. The second I pulled it out of the water and removed the hook, my friend snagged a photo and I held it in the water until it sped off. Wasn't targeting bass, just fishing for whatever was going to bite.

 

Apologies for what is probably a totally newb question to you all, but based off of the illustrations I'm having a hard time identifying which species this is. My guess is Largemouth, but if someone could let me know for sure, I'd appreciate it.

I'm speechless, that fish should have been placed right away in the water not in the dirt. OOS means release right away , no pics.

It was literally out of the water for no longer than 15-20 seconds :l You can see the water line is at the top of the photo (which wasn't taken by me either), I only had it out to remove the hook. Sorry, literally first day...

I dont want to hijack this thread but I am hoping one day there is no longer a season on bass in ontario (or at least an extended season). There are so many "incidental" catches fishing for other species that I makes no sense why they cant be opened to a strict catch and release or reduced limit season. Yes I understand that bed fishing is a thing and the idea is that we are leaving bass alone to spawn but numbers are by no means low, and we can fish for just about every other species during their spawn (weather provided) I dont know guys, just my 2c

What the heck are you fishing for legally in grenadier pond that's in season? Pan fish lures won't catch you that large mouth.

a simple nightcrawler setup would catch just about any fish from panfish to pike.

Was just using a 2" small plastic lure. Was casting toward the center of the pond, about 10-15ft north of that tiny deck on the east side of the pond. There were about 10-12 other people fishing as well, some using jigs, plastic crickets, and spinners.

 

 

I was under the impression that this was reliable for panfish, it's what my friends had taught me to do a few years back. Again, it wasn't intentional, I didn't realize it was a bass until i pulled it out and my friend pointed out what it even was - it's the first time I've ever fished in Ontario.

For what it's worth, I did read regulations (and bought my licence), and at the point of realizing it was in fact a bass, unhooked and released it. Again, it's literally my first time catching a fish by myself, so I don't see the reason for why there is so much finger pointing. Not the way I learned to effectively correct people if they were for whatever reason misinformed. I'm sure you all can imagine since it was my very first time, there was a degree of excitement and adrenaline involved, yet despite that I immediately unhooked it and made sure it went on it's way, I didn't stop and pose for a photo with it, or carelessly beach it for an extended period of time. 15-20 seconds max. The photo was taken by someone else in the time it took me to simply set down the rod and hook so I could hold the fish in the water for it to go back. If you guys want to hall monitor, then great, you got me - not like I didn't already acknowledge and take responsibility for the catch when I posted the topic to begin with, but whatever makes you feel validated is fine with me.

Kind of lame to join a forum and you are met with a raised nose for simply being new or asking questions. At least I am asking questions and called myself out on what happened, I'm sure there a ton of people out there who know very well what they are doing and exploit or poach regardless. Guess that's what I get for making my experience visible for others to critique; lesson learned, lol. Wow. Great way to start a pastime.

The reason I put bass on top of the list for most aggressive freshwater predators. they just  hit almost any type of offering. I've thrown in just about anything in the water and no longer surprise having bass at the end of my line.

That is not your regular panfish bait/lure. That said, that would qualify as a pike, perch or bass plastic bait.For what I understand, as soon as you are able to identify the specie, it's no longer necessary to pull it out of the water. Immediately remove y our hook/lure/bait and release the fish.

Don't take it too personally, we are all just very passionate anglers. I'm not surprised you received the type of response that you did; since you are new to the forum people will be quick to judge. I think every member has experienced it, me included. Just keep on keepin' on and the hostility will subside.

Welcome to OFF siegfried, you have been properly initiated now.

A lot of people have their panties twisted. I'm sure some of these people, if they were to hook a 40+ inch class Tarpon in Florida, they would put it into the boat and take some pictures with it, even if the law requires fish of such size must remain in the water at all times. We see enough of these hero shots all over the internet, even to the extreme with anglers hugging a huge tarpon for a hero shot.

 

Although 2" plastic isn't a common panfish lure, it does catch panfish. There are White Perch, Yellow Perch and Black Crappie big enough in the pond to take a lure that size.
