Hi all,

Relatively new to fishing and have a question for you. I have been having trouble with my line becoming twisted, as it seems it is constantly "jumping" off the reel when I'm casting, leaving it to become a tangled mess.

I have been doing some reading online about line and reel combos, but have not been able to come to a general conclusion. I have been thinking about going to a braided line as I read it is less prone to tangles as it has little to zero memory. I mostly fish trout and bass in small to medium sized lakes.

Here are the specs of my reel and current line:

Spinning Reel: lb(kg) - yrds (m) 6(2.7) - 210(190) 8(3.6) - 170 (155)
DIA (mm) - m 0.25 - 190 0.28 - 155

Line: Monofilament - DIA 0.30mm - 10lbs test - Sufix Pro Select

I guess my question would be: What type of line should I be using? Dia and test? Do I need a leader?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Your line has been put on without enough tension.

When you line your reel every say 20-30 turns of the reel grab the line and pull it off the reel setting the drag fairly high.

This will tighten the line around the spool and prevent it from jumping off when you cast.

Also make sure not to load too much line onto the reel or you'll be back in the same situation.

To fix this: Just set the drag high, put some line out. Reel it back in and repeat a few times.

This should solve the problem

Line lure weight ratio can also play a factor in the problem you're facing. If you're using heavy line say 15lb test and the lure you're casting is light, you would notice that it won't cast far and you're casting a coil of mono line. that will surely create a mess. That can happen on braided too and once a braided line gets tangled, it's even harder to untangle it.

Try a limp mono in a smaller size (recommend Trilene XL in 6 or 8 LB). The line spills sometimes because it's too stiff and/or the arbor (spool diameter) is small.

Or try going with braided line 10-15 LB (low memory) but it will be tough filling that big spool of yours. You may want to keep some old mono on as backing.

Braid with backing is a good idea. It doesn't jump off the spool like mono will. It can be a pain to untangle, but if you spool it tight enough that shouldn't be a problem.
