Cleos are awesome off the pier.
They cast a mile and sink quickly.
Try this.
Cast out and let it sink using steamboat method. 1 steamboat 2 steamboat 3 steamboat.
Gives you an idea on your depth should you connect.
Retrieve rate slooooowwwwww.
Have always found early morning successful.
Tight lines

Thanks Tossing - It's tips like that that encouraged me to join the forum rather than just snoop as a guest. I'll try it and hopefully report with some success!

I'm just getting into pier fishing myself and this is definitely helping out. Now I've been tossing a couple of different rapalas as well as a few different spinners. Haven't been out to get any spoons yet. Do they reliably produce better than the rest out on the piers?

I have found the best producer to be Moonshine spoons, I've thrown body baits at them but have only hooked up with spoons.

Just got back from the same West Trib as yesterday. Different story today:

From the parking it looks like more people were out on the water but there were way fewer boats within eye-sight of shore, and those that were (and looked like they were fishing) were well off shore and less packed than yesterday.

I didn't see any fish worth mentioning swimming. There was still some surface action but much less than yesterday. It was mixed between out in open water and in the harbour channel.

Have others experienced that? Where they seem to come in close and then back out?

I think they follow the warm water, so if the wind blows the warm water off shore , then the salmon follow.

gotta pay attention to local weather, if its crazy hot, chances are, the water will warm up significantly, and fish will move deeper, they are cold blooded after all. cleos with a hammered finish work well, glow spoons at night can be productive. williams wobblers, and body baits such as the j12 variety work well.

Tried the mouth of ans east trib today just to test a new rod.. No action what so ever. The water was very warm, i would not expect to see any action for at least a couple weeks.

Love my new rod though!

Tried another Trib to the west and there were lots of jumpers, just too far out. Conditions were perfect.. I wouldn't be surprised if someone hooked up after I left.

Yea water temps are steadily falling now that this cooler weather has moved in, give it a week or three.

Seen my first Salmon of the year today while walking the dog. It seemed too small, I guess he is going to go back to the lake after his little venture.
