Yup, I'm on the same boat.
I already see vids of guys fighting salmon in less then a foot of water.
Salmon are trying to fight back but its so shallow that they beach themselves.

As you well know hitting the initial fresh run is sweet..
Than bail.
Till the hos and bows appear.

Haven't had any luck at my local pier. Been waiting for a nice calm water night to take the kayak out and give that a go.
@tossing iron - very true we need some good rains and soon.

Always does.
And yes piers are always hit and miss.
Spring time we used to hit the piers daybreak and fish till we had to get to class. lol

@tossing iron, I agree about working for it, but it depends where you fight them. There is some fun when finessing a nice 25lb Salmon on 6lb line! On the rivers closest to me, they see you much easier then you can see them due to how clear the water is. There is lots of room for them to swim up and down though so its part of the Challenges I have to deal with when fighting some of these monsters!

All I use is 6lb test.
Even accidentally hooked up and landed a 25 lb plus Chinook one spring on a ultra light lightning rod and reel one spring off fifty point harbour.
Wore a deep groove on the tip eye.
Can't believe to this day line never snapped.
And no.
I never use leaders other than for pike.

Still no leader.
But I did learn from my ultra light experience. lol

I use 6.6# to be exact (Blackbird Floro) on my drift setup. 12lb Seagar when casting from a pier.
Lures cost more than beads these days!

I'm never one to mess around with light leader, 8-10lb in the rivers and 20lb from the pier.

20lb braid to 20 flouro on the pier for me too, and you know maybe in the rivers if I could ever find my box of trebles

Wanna help out a noob here?
I've been hitting the pier off and on for about 3 weeks with no luck. Obviously I'd like to increase my chances...
I've been fishing 10 lbs mono to a steel leader. It's been nice since I don't have a go-to lure yet, no point since nothing has worked yet. Since my last outing I've been wondering if the leader might have contributed to my zero fish.
A lot that I'm reading here is that the salmon are striking lures that irritate them. Is that true for staging fish (or any salmon off a pier) as well as fish in the rivers/creeks? If so, do they care how the lure is presented, other than offensively as possible? I can't imagine a fish thinking 'That thing is pissing me off, Imma bite it! No, wait, 4' leader, I'll pass, f***ing newb.'
Should I downgrade to just a snap/swivel? Or should I just bite it and eat into my fluoro supply and make a leader and tie in each time I switch lures?
Appreciate the help.

First I would get rid of the steel leader. That is not required if you are still using 10 lb mono line I would tie directly to it.Wanna help out a noob here?

You do not need a flouro leader because of the mono line you are using.
In clear water nooks spook easy so they can see your steel leader.
Glow in the dark cleos are you best bet I will charge them with a ultraviolet light you can get at home depot.
IMO I would spool with 20 lb braid and 3 ft of 15 lb trilene big game as your leader.
I have many years of pier fishing, you just put in your time. Eventually you are going to cast one within a few yards of a nook and bang you are on.
Make sure you set your drag properly as that first run is a doozy. The initial hit on your lure is a runaway Mac truck
Good luck out there

all you need is; 2500 series reel, 7' to 10' fast action medium rod, 10lb braided line, 2' 20lb fluoro leader, 3/4oz glow cleo blue/white, some muscles to cast as far as you can. charge the cleos with flash from cheap disposable camera. best times are 9pm-12am and 4am - 6am.
