Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums and to fishing as well. I went with my dad in my younger years but never truly enjoyed until this weekend.

Went with a buddy who's pretty big in to fishing and has the nice gear and a boat. Short to say I'm now very interested in fishing. I brought my own canadian tire spinreel set and found out quickly that it wasn't any good. I borrowed my buddy's baitcast combo and fell in love with it.

Now, I'm looking for gear to call my own. I've looked at kijiji and prices are pretty expensive, sometimes more expensive than new ones.

I'm hoping people can point me in the right direction and help me get my gear (medium rod, 6.~:1 baitcast reel), tackle box already filled.

I'm going again on the weekend of the 26th in lake Negeek.

Thanks in advance!

Ugly Stik casting rod + reel combo = cant go wrong with i, but if you want to spend more $$$ I'd recommend checking out PRO J (they always help out at that shop), or if you want - Bass Pro - Abu Garcia Orra SX + Ugly Stik Gx2 (my setup right now) - works good im fme.

Welcome to OFF!

Maybe ask your buddy to see what combo he has and try to get the same or something similar to it?

I notice you mention you want a bait casting reel, If that is the case look for promos (Bass Pro usually sells out emails advertising a decent Abu Garcia for ~$50.00). Personally I think you should start with a Spinning Reel if your not to familiar with how to use Bait Casters, If ever you decide to fish alone (without your buddies) you can resolve any issues you have on the spot. With a Bait Caster it takes some time and effort to learn how to setup all your "tension springs" and how to control the line from a cast so you don't get a birds nest every time! Using a Bait caster also requires Heavy Braid (to avoid most tangles) so that can be expensive to spool and differ some fish.

If you were to invest in a Spinning Reel, I would recommend a Pfleuger President (in a Model 30 or 35 - Equivalent to a 2000/3000 size reel).

They retail for around $70 and will not cause you any issues for 10 years as long as you take care of it (do not put it in sand).

As for rods, All Ugly Sticks are indestructible. You can feel the smallest bites from a pan fish to the Freight Train attack of a Salmon. Longer is better, but be careful you don't take anything too long or you wont be able to cast from shore under trees and such.

Hope this helps!
