Caught this out of a local creek in southern Ontario and not too sure about the id.

I've caught Green Sunfish, and Bluegill in the same location.

I'm confused since the colour of its belly seems off for a Green Sunfish. And it's opercular flap seems only black.

Any suggestions?

thanks!

the more I look at it, I think it's just a colourful Green Sunfish

I think it's just a colourful subabult Pumpkinseed Sunfish. Green Sunfish should have a much larger mouth and orange/white margins for the soft dorsal, soft anal and caudal fins. There should also be a spot on the base of the soft dorsal fin and a spot on the base of the soft anal fin. I can clearly see that the spot is absent in the anal fin.

Those orange spots on the side of the body is pretty indicative of Pumpkinsed.

Geez- can't even id a pumpkinseed

When I first brought it up thats what I thought it was, but I was under the impression that all Pumpkinseed (even tiny ones) would have a red border on the opercular flap.

Didn't know about the spot on the anal fin for Green Sunfish IDs - that's helpful.

thanks again.
