Hi there everyone. I was hoping i could find a good forum for fishing and looks like a found it! I look forward to getting to know everyone and learning a-lot in the process. Im gonna try my luck at some steelhead fishing this spring mostly tributaries from Lake Ontario and Lake Huron. Wondering if anyone could tell me what time of March or April we should expect steelhead spawn to be in full swing?

Welcome to OFF!
All tribs are different, some might be early and some might be late. I remember last years run was weird.

My guess is an earlier spawn than normal, this winter has been very mild and we dont have the snow for a big spring runoff, so my guess is they will be getting it on before things heat up too much and water levels drop too low. No fish spawning yet in the little trib near my place, a good rain or two should pick it up and get things goin.

To add to what Pump and Huron are saying, a good way to gauge when they are here in full numbers is to go to the piers at mouths of rivers and cast spoons to see if fish are staging in big numbers yet. The more fish at the mouth, the closer we are to having them all in the creeks.

As an aside, you don't need the spawn to be in full swing to catch them. You can catch them at the mouth now when they are staging. You can catch them in the creeks during the spawn. You can catch them post-spawn in the creeks and on their way out at the mouth. Even within the creeks, they may be found at the lower section (close to the mouth), mid section or in the headwaters...depending on how far along the spawning migration it happens to be.
The important thing to know where in the watershed you expect to find them based on their current stage of spawning migration. People can do equally well (numbers and quality) pre-spawn, spawn and post-spawn.
But as Ron said, every creek is slightly different. Some creeks tend to start earlier or finish later. It's for you to find out
