Hello everyone. I was wondering if any one could help me out with a main line to leader question. Im headed down to Maine this summer to fish for stripers and i am gonna try to make due with what i have already. I was gonna use 15 pound braid to 12 pound fluorocarbon leader. Is the difference on diameter too large to connect with a uni knot?

they are pretty much the exact same diameter.   i use 15lb braid to 10lb mono for pier fishing.  i use a surgeons knot most times, or an albright knot

FG knot for me, helps when braid diameter is thinner then leader diameter. Lots of good videos on youtube...

The braid would be much thinner than the fluro in this case, I would say you are fine to do a uni to uni since I have done it with 20lb braid and 10lb fluro without any issues. If the leader is going to be 3' or less I would just go with a micro swivel, it will help with line twist and both of those lines should break before the swivel..

Experiment with these knots and use what you feel is comfortable.

 

I should start experimenting/practicing with other knots, I only tie 2 knots for fishing...improved clinch and albright.

I tried the FG knot and it didn't work great because I made the mistake of using a lighter fluro leader. The FG knot is best suited for connecting main line to a heavier leader so the main line bites down into the leader material.

Now, since I use a lighter fluro leader with braided main line, I use the Alberto knot and it has worked great. It can be a bit tricky and time consuming to tie at first, but with practice and time you'll get it!

I use a uni to uni knot but I like the look of some of these. The way the tag ends lay perpendicular to the main line makes the uni not go through guides well.

I use the FG, too. I've had great luck with it.
