Dentist says that's good?
I don't believe you have a clue what flossing really is.

yes, sometimes they will grab on and shake the crap out of it, but if the current is fast enough, or the fish holds on long enough, you will see your fly line start to curl back, as if it were snagged up on bottom. in clear water, no really an issue, since you can the strike, but when you can't, like when the water is dirtied up a bit, you really have to focus on the very tip of you fly line, if it drags, curls, or sinks in an unusual way, tighten up and pop the hook
I started by watching my leader line but found that for the area I was fishing, the tippet was too long and I would miss my strikes.
There were a couple that turned and ran (pulled my line) but by the time I went to set the hook they already spit it. I adjusted by shortening my line where I could and watched their reactions instead.
I don't like using indicators either (otherwise I may as well use a pin) so I was watching my fly directly.
Any other tips would be greatly appreciated too

anyone know a trust worthy drift fishing rod? Lost 2 today I think it was my gear that flawed(and maybe me;)) and my rod is 6'6 so it's way to short?
Also why isn't there any MNR officers there, guys that were fishing next to me were flossing all day though they broke off on about 9 fish
It would be hard to prove that people flossing are intentionally doing anything wrong as the goal of flossing is to essentially mimic the fish taking the bait (usually single egg, something small) by finessing the line/hook in such a way to get a hook set in the mouth. Snagging on the other hand is much more obvious in terms of equipment used and technique. Were they flossing or snagging?

They have a hook with a. Single egg and 2 splitshotz but they would would cast at the start of a choke point to a pool put there rod tip in the water and rip and would hook up when ripping but they either got it in the side of the face or mouth so I guess us could be snagging besides that they were only using a single hook

this always a key when doing the dirty waters...first 2 feet of fly line tip usually goes straight. any direction when it goes strraight. set the hook. snag or not....too late is too late. there no better late than sorry and too early is too early...i have a different approach when nymphing and swinging. when i'm swinging streamers...i let them take for about 2-3 secs before I set it. with nymphing a dip on my indicator is a strike and set it as fast as i can.

It might be an unethical way of fishing but the idea of salmon fishing is to get your hook (with bait of course) in to the "strike zone" (it could be a legit take or we could just call it...where the salmons mouth are) split shots help your baited hook get there fast. like you said, it you'r doing this at the choke point or front end of the pool...the same way when you're float fishing and getting your baited hook at the tail end of the pool.
snagging flossing combo...anchoring your SS like a baws....

He was ripping it and hooked a few fish on the back and tail but none of the fish were hooked in the mouth,I assumed it was flossing because he only had a single hook

You can snag salmon with a single hook...it just makes it subtle but it's still snagging. I've seen the set up. i saw the rig myself. he was anchoring a heavy sinker and a single hook 6 inches above it....waiting for a fish to swim through his line. I thought flossing is when you freely line shallow water with fish moving up and have your hook with yarn just drift by. at least that was my understanding about flossing.

and if the hookset misses, or there was nothing there, you can turn that hook set into a cast if you are quick enough and there open space behind you

I fly fish around pinners all the time since i started fly fishing 5 years ago. not until this year that I was told I'm not suppose to fly fish when everyone else is float fishing...and I was like...
I have my own set of rules when I do fly fish around a pool with pinners. both ends, not in between. I just don't see any reason why both styles can't co-exist.

I believe flossing is using a miminimal bait (usually something like yarn that barely covers the hook) and floating/drifting this hook directly into or near the mouth. (near being cheek/nose etc)
I have seen some people on the river doing this first hand and it can be done quite effectively.... No real way to prove they are fishing illegal besides the 4 foot long leaders with a flailing hook in the current....
I stopped fishing with or near people that do it, because its stupid and waste of my time to be near them..
I am learning to fly fish, and I do wish I could do it more effectively/productively but only time and practice will tell... unless someone wants to guide me....

I hate pinners and fly guys.
Give me room with my Stradic.
Why can't we all co-co- exist. Lol
Unless your tossing leaded trebles I'd never have the nerve to tell someone their choice is not welcome.
If I'm not comfortable with a situation .
I just move on. Lots of water further up.

That's right TI up is where their at. I watched about 5 guys fish a pool last week in the west end , synchronized float fishing to the tee. Even the MNR officers that walked by couldn't tell if these guys are flossing or not. Countless hook ups in the mouth, snout , gill , cheek and some in the top of the head . I probably counted 4 fish landed and maybe 10 fish on that spit or broke off. All this in about 40 - 45 min. while talking to a bike cop.
