Hi Folks, 

 

A few buddies and I are going to do some camping/fishing near Port Loring for May 24.  We went last year and did not so hot for fishing, only getting 2 walleye all weekend between 4 guys (still had a blast though!). The lake we were at is called Big Caribou Lake, we got kind of screwed by the weather as it rained the entire sunday which I think turned the bite off.  This has been a tradition for the past couple years to go up north for may long and has always been great but we've never had much luck with fishing

 

I'm hoping to get some pointers for fishing in the area, what to use, how deep ect.  We will be fishing out of kayaks for the weekend and going for pike, walleye and lakers.  It'll depend on the weather and temp at the time of course but some general tips would be awesome

 

Hopefully we get some good weather this year but either way we'll have some fun, just hoping to get into some fish.  We mostly fish rivers at home so its some new territory for us

Fished the pickerel river last summer and found mostly bass, with a few pike and small walleye mixed in. Good kayak access but bass will be closed during may 24.

Would you bottom bounce them that early in the year?

Yea we caught a couple monster bass when we were trolling for pike.  Shame they are closed early season, they put up a crazy fight

Try key in on smaller bays and creeks flowing in. It might be a late spawn and you might be able to catch some big Walleye and Pike. Trolling some crankbaits can get you some action as well.

Ide bottom bounce the harness till I found where they were. Try trolling diffrent depths sometimes 1 foot can make a difference

Will do.  I think part of it is we need to be smarter with our fishing, like i said we usually fish rivers so finding the fish is a bit different

 

We'll troll different depths between the 5 of us and switch to whatever depth catches first i guess.

I go to Cartier Lake in May to help my buddy open his cottage and we go fishing most evenings/mornings.  Last couple of years it was a pretty tough go.  Last year we did manage a brute (9lb pickerel) on a worm harness and bottom bouncer very deep in the lake.  Other than a couple of small pike that was it.  

 

Buggy but better than sitting at home.
