Just got a 5wt fly outfit, BPS brand, nothing special. Is this a good all around fly rod size? I'm obviously not going to be catching any BEASTS on it, but want to know my limits.

Also, I have an older fly rod and don't know the weight of it, how can I tell?

Welcome to the forum Grayson.

A 5wt is great for resident trout, smaller bass, panfish, etc. You wouldn't want to be fishing for pike, bigger bass, carp...definitely not migratory trout/salmon.

As for the older rod, I'll leave that to someone with more experience. Good luck!

Like Will said, a 5wt is good general purpose fly rod. It’s my go to rod, unless I’m steelheading and in that case I fish a 7wt.

Does the older rod have no marking at all? Put the 5wt line on it and give it a try. If the rod seems stiff, I would assume it’s a heavier WT, if it feels to flexible, I would assume it’s a lighter WT. I say “assume” because “feel” can be subjective.
