First year fishing, rod/reel advice

Hey, This is my first year fishing. I've gone before, but just with borrowed stuff. My buddy is into fishing and knows quite a bit, but we're both unsure about how good this rod/reel is.
Its from crappy tire, on sale from $80 to $40, and im not a hardcore fisher (obviously). Just looking for something that wont break catching upto 8lbs (if that ever happens)
this is the combo i'm looking at, its a Zebco Recon 3 Spin Combo, 6-ft 6-in
