Long weekend bass

02 September 2014 - 11:28 AM

Hi All,

I wanted to share some catches from the long weekend. I haven't fished too much since spring, so it was great to get out and get into some nice smallies. They were all caught in a small lake about 20 mins outside Owen Sound. I got four on the Sunday after the rain and dark clouds that pushed through,  the bite just turned on and couldn't keep them off the hook. I was using a live target small mouth crank, white jig head with 6'' black and chatreuse berkley twister tail and a #4 black fury (chatreuse). On Monday morning it was bright and very warm and I managed to land a few fish but this big beauty (last photo) was the fish of the day, it weighed in at 4.6lbs which is just shy of my PB. I wish I got a better pic but it was a heavy fish. I got this on a texas rigged (cone sinker and red bead) pumkin seed turtle back worm. Equipment: 7ft St croix Med rod with a shimano stradic 2500 and 8lbs mono line or 6'6'' St. croix crank rod with a shimano curado dhsv with 14lbs mono. Hope you enjoy.Attached File  CIMG0476.JPG   131.77KB   159 downloadsAttached File  CIMG0482.JPG   138.21KB   154 downloadsAttached File  CIMG0477.JPG   133.1KB   153 downloadsAttached File  CIMG0074.JPG   176.67KB   157 downloads

Bait Fish Identification

22 May 2014 - 08:16 PM

With my focus moving from steel to now pike, I needed to refresh myself on bait fish regulations and identification. In my search, I found a great document which may help with bait fish identification.

Make 'er a Laker

I wanted to share my fishing outing over the weekend. I was fishing a small lake just outside Owen Sound over the long weekend. On Sunday, it was windy (NW) and about 10 degrees and the water temp was 13 degrees. I starting trolling about 8 am until using a bunch of different colour J-11 which normally pay off when fishing pike, after exhausting all my go to colours I changed it up to a rapala BX swimmer (silver) and with in minutes this beauty hit hard and the fight was on about 10 mins later I managed to drift back to my dock and finally land the fish. I didn't take any measurements but I think he was about 8lbs. The fish buried the top hook right in the side of his mouth and made for an easy hook removal, I released him back to fight another day (hopefully). I landed two more small pike in the boat and then finished  my day around 1pm.

I was using 15lbs mono on my shimano curado DVS with a 25lbs seagar leader (2 foot long) and a St croix 6'6' med fast rod.Attached File  2014 Gavin fishing 003.jpg   282.73KB   146 downloadsAttached File  May18th 2014 004web.jpg   93.52KB   132 downloads
